Discover Woodhall Spa
Accommodation in Woodhall Spa
Discover Woodhall Spa through its different facets: cinema history, woodland and nature, a place of remembrance, and opportunities for exercise and golf. The Pinewoods is a publicly accessible deciduous woodland, the Spa Trail is a surfaced route between Horncastle and Woodhall Spa, and the Hotchkin Course is a heathland golf course. You can choose which themes to focus on according to your interests during your stay.
Cinema and local history
The Kinema in the Woods began as a sports and entertainment pavilion in the late 19th century. In 1922, it was converted into a cinema. The building’s history therefore goes back to its earlier use as a pavilion, while the conversion marks its transition to a cinema. The Kinema also stands out for its projection technology: Screen One uses rear projection. It is said to be the only full-time cinema still operating in the United Kingdom to use this method. For culture enthusiasts, the building’s long history and a distinctive technical feature come together here.
Woodland, gardens and wildlife
The Pinewoods is located in the heart of the historic village of Woodhall Spa. This 7.6-hectare deciduous woodland is open to the public and provides a habitat for grey squirrels, great spotted woodpeckers, treecreepers and muntjac deer. These named species give a specific impression of the woodland’s wildlife: mammals and birds are among the animals found there. The Pinewoods thus combines a clearly defined woodland area with opportunities to observe nature in the village.
Jubilee Park covers ten acres and combines ornamental gardens with a heated outdoor swimming pool and a children’s playground. The park is just a few minutes’ walk from the village centre. The gardens, swimming pool and play area each offer something different: you can enjoy the park as a green space or visit one of its named facilities in particular. Its short walking distance from the village centre is a useful point of reference when planning your stay.
Remembrance and natural heritage
The Dambuster Memorial in Royal Square commemorates the heroes of the Royal Air Force’s 617 Squadron and was erected in 1987. Woodhall Spa Airfield Nature Reserve offers a different perspective on the history of the air force. It combines the heritage of a former RAF airfield with a wildlife habitat; the 617 Squadron is also part of its historical connection. An access code is required to enter the nature reserve. Obtain one before you arrive.
Out and about and on the golf course
The Spa Trail is a three-mile surfaced horse-riding and walking route between Horncastle and Woodhall Spa. You can use it on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The route is traffic-free and suitable for wheelchair users and families with pushchairs. It follows the course of an old railway line and part of the Horncastle Canal. Wooden, stone and metal sculptures inspired by local history and wildlife add interest to the route. The trail thus combines different ways of getting around with visible themes from history and nature.
The Hotchkin Course is a heathland golf course with distinctive natural bunkers and a considerable tactical challenge. It is open to golfers of all abilities and offers extensive practice facilities. Compared with the Spa Trail, the focus here is on tactical golf and practice opportunities; the trail, by contrast, centres on its traffic-free route and the different ways it can be used. This makes it easier to see which of the two options best suits your interests.
