Ecton offers several clearly defined themes to consider when planning a trip: buildings from different centuries, local memorials, traditional stone houses and the circular walking route Walk 128: The Ecton Circular. There are also open fields and tree-lined meadows. This allows you to distinguish between cultural history, landscape and a walking route when planning your visit.

Architectural history in Ecton

The Church of St Mary Magdalene contains fabric dating from the 13th, 14th and 19th centuries. Its north chancel window dates from 1924 and was created by Morris and Co. The dates refer to different aspects of the church: the centuries identify building phases, while 1924 dates the window. This distinction makes the church interesting to travellers who want to understand its different historical layers.

Ecton Hall is also one of the village’s listed buildings and is designated Grade II*. Rectory Farm House was built in 1741 as a glebe farm. The three buildings represent different aspects of architectural history: the church’s various building phases, Ecton Hall’s listed status, and the specific construction date and original function of Rectory Farm House.

Memorials and the Franklin family

The Ecton War Memorial Shrine is a Grade II listed First World War memorial, erected in 1917. Elements commemorating the Second World War were added later. Each of the wooden rolls of honour bears nine names. This makes it possible to distinguish the original occasion for the memorial from the elements added later.

A bronze plaque unveiled in 1910 commemorates Benjamin Franklin’s connection with Ecton. The gravestones of Thomas and Eleanor Franklin are located near Ecton’s church. Thomas was the uncle and Eleanor the aunt of the American statesman and scientist Dr Benjamin Franklin. The site of The Three Horseshoes was once home to the Franklin family’s forge. Thomas worked there as the last member of the family to do so. The plaque, gravestones and forge site thus highlight different aspects: they commemorate Benjamin Franklin, his family and his uncle’s former work.

Landscape and circular walk

The landscape and traditional building style also shape impressions of Ecton. The village has stone houses with thatched roofs, and lies between open fields and tree-lined meadows. These features complement the historic buildings and memorials with a glimpse of the rural architecture and surroundings.

Walk 128: The Ecton Circular starts at Ecton’s war memorial. Immediately after the bridge over the A45, the route follows a bridleway; it follows the Nene Way to Whiston Lock, running alongside the river. This connects a named starting point with a described stretch along the river and a destination. Check the condition of the path and the waymarking before setting off.
