Overstone: Historic Sites, Golf and Leisure
Accommodation in Overstone
Overstone brings together traces of settlement history, buildings, and leisure facilities. If you’re looking for a hotel in Overstone, you can include these different points of interest in your travel plans: the village’s history leads to former sites and phases of development, while golf and other leisure facilities appeal to different interests. Consider whether you’d rather explore the history of the buildings and settlement or make time for golf and leisure facilities.
Settlement history and traces in the landscape
The village’s history includes a probable relocation of the settlement: the former village was presumably moved before 1737 and rebuilt along the present-day road north of the park. The medieval church and the rectory immediately west of the hall were exceptions. This means that both the older church and the later rebuilding of the village belong to different periods in Overstone’s history.
West and north of Overstone Park House, between the house and an ornamental pond dating from the early 19th century, are fragmentary earthwork remains: hollow ways and building platforms. The two features offer different clues about the former use of the landscape: hollow ways reveal old routes, while building platforms point to the locations of structures. The remains are fragmentary; they can be viewed as individual traces in the landscape, not as a fully preserved complex.
Overstone Hall is also part of the more recent history of the area. A 2018 statement recorded that most of the hall was a roofless ruin after the devastating fire of 2001. If Overstone Hall is part of your visit plans, check the current access conditions and the state of the site in advance.
Church, country house, and Pytchley Gates
St. Nicholas’ Church contains monuments from an earlier church in Overstone Park, which was demolished. Overstone College is a mid-19th-century country house, designed by W. M. Tuelon for the first Lord Overstone. Its date, designer, and patron are therefore all central to the story of the building.
Pytchley Gates originally stood at Pytchley Old Hall and were moved in the mid-19th century. The building description notes an archway of limestone ashlar with pedestrian arches on either side. This connects their origins with their design: the former location and later relocation tell a different part of the story from the material and layout of the archway.
Golf and leisure facilities
Overstone Park has an 18-hole golf course that originally opened in 1992. Tee times and fitness classes can be booked online. If golf is part of your plans, the number of holes and opening year are useful points of reference; tee times and fitness classes can be booked online.
The swimming pool at Overstone Park is 17.5 metres long and located at deck level. There is also a steam room, a whirlpool, and a sauna. An entry dated 15 April 2025 lists two outdoor tennis courts at Overstone Park Resort; check in advance whether they’re currently available if the courts are important to your travel decision.
Circular walk and directions
The “Walk 138: Overstone Circular” route runs mostly along village paths, across fields, and along field paths. It includes several stiles and crosses the A43 a few times. Check the path conditions and access before setting out. This information helps you assess the character of the route without assuming a particular walking time or difficulty level.
To get to Overstone Park, leave the M1 at junction 15 and then take the A508/A45 ring road towards Northampton/Wellingborough. The historic sites, leisure facilities, and circular walk each offer a different focus. Choose your hotel in Overstone based on which of these matters to you during your stay; check the specific booking terms with the relevant accommodation provider.
