Chalk landscape and nature reserve
The geology beneath Kensworth consists entirely of chalk. Kensworth Nature Reserve includes newly created chalk-rich grassland and woodland habitats. A section is also exposed there, extending from the upper part of the Upper Turonian Lewes Nodular Chalk Formation to the Top Rock of the Lower Coniacian. The Kensworth section is also the stratotype of the Kensworth Nodular Chalk Member, a geological reference section for this unit. This distinguishes the general geological character of the chalk beneath Kensworth from the specifically named sequence in the nature reserve.
Churches and architectural history
Most of St Mary's Church is early Norman and was built within a hundred years of the Norman Conquest. The south doorway dates from the 12th century. Its capitals depict a fox and a crane on one side, and a kite and a snake on the other. Lynch House is a Grade II* listed house dating from the 18th century, built of red brick and featuring a Roman Doric porch.
Old Greenend Farmhouse adds another period to the area's architectural history: it probably dates from the 16th century and was extended in the early 19th century. At Bury Farm, near the church, lies the site of Kensworth's old manor house, first documented in the 12th century. Remains of a moat survive along one side of the farmhouse.
Kensworth's local religious history also includes its Wesleyan Methodist Chapel. It was built in 1830; the present-day chapel opened in 1935. Alongside the early Norman church, its south doorway and later buildings, the area's history offers several distinct architectural and historical points of interest.
