March offers several distinct themes to consider when planning a trip: local history, waterways, nature and events. If you’re looking for hotels in March, you can start by considering which of these will shape your stay.

Culture and architecture in March

The March & District Museum is in the town centre and presents local history through exhibitions, collections, audio stations and interactive features. One architectural highlight is St Wendreda’s Church: its hammerbeam roof dates from the early 16th century and features more than 100 angels. This brings together a varied presentation of local history and a single, clearly dated architectural feature.

The River Nene, waterways and rail connections

March lies on the River Nene and is part of the Fenland Waterway Nene-Ouse Navigation Link. Time-limited moorings for boats are available in the town centre. Their availability may change with local waterway conditions, so check in advance if you’re planning to travel by boat.

Direct train services run from March station to Ely, Peterborough, Ipswich and Stansted Airport; Cambridge is connected via Ely. Check the timetables before travelling. Moorings and train services address different planning needs: the moorings are for a time-limited boating stay in the town centre, while the train services provide travel to the destinations listed.

The Fens, parks and nature

West End Park in March has a skatepark. The Fens around March offer relatively flat terrain for walking and cycling. Both activities therefore share a specific point of reference: the nature of the terrain.

The Ouse Washes Nature Reserve is the largest area of washland in the United Kingdom. The reserve offers riverside walks and birdwatching in winter; birds that can be seen in winter include ducks and whooper swans. This seasonal note is useful for planning if birdwatching is to be a focus of your trip. Check the reserve’s exact opening status before you travel.

Events and when to visit

The St George’s Fayre takes place annually in March town centre and is free to attend. Attractions, street food, live entertainment and more than 100 stalls at Market Place, Broad Street and West End Park were announced for the 2026 edition. The programme may change from year to year.

Fenland District Council supports the March Christmas Market; the event is scheduled for the first Sunday in December. If an event is the reason for your trip, check the specific date and programme for the edition you want to attend in advance. When choosing when to visit, there is a difference between winter birdwatching, the annual Fayre and the Christmas Market in December.
