Stow cum Quy combines trails near Quy Fen with historic buildings, a country house and events at Quy Park. When looking for a hotel for your stay, it helps to first narrow down the reason for your trip: will a walk be the focus of your visit, are you interested in architectural history, or are you planning around a tour or event date? Access and scheduling arrangements vary depending on your focus.

Trails near Quy Fen

Quy Fen is open to the public via several footpaths and bridleways that start from Stow cum Quy, Horningsea and Fen Ditton. These paths offer several starting points for a visit, rather than tying it to a single access point. One named walking option is the Fen Edge Trail: the walk begins at the church in Stow cum Quy, follows the Quy Water and runs along the long-distance Harcamlow Way. This lets you choose between access via the three villages and a route with a clearly named starting point. As path conditions can change, it is advisable to check the condition of the Fen Edge Trail before setting out.

Buildings and their history

The Parish Church of St Mary is a Grade II* listed building. Quy Water Mill is an early 19th-century watermill; its waterwheel is still in place.

Quy Hall is a country house whose origins probably date from the late 15th to the 18th century; the building was remodelled in 1868–1870. Its possible date of origin therefore reaches further back than the early 19th-century Quy Water Mill, while the remodelling of Quy Hall marks a later, precisely specified period. Quy Hall offers tours for small groups; advance booking is required. As dates and availability can vary, plan your visit around the tour dates on offer.

Historic use and events

In 1652, Quy Fen was transferred jointly and in equal shares to the parishes of Quy, Horningsea and Fen Ditton for the recreation of their parishioners. The historical purpose thus explicitly names all three parishes and the shared recreational use.

Stow-cum-Quy lies on the B1102 road to Anglesey Abbey and Burwell. Quy Park hosts the Cambridge Country Show and the Ancient Oak Medieval Fayre. As event dates can vary, check the dates if a visit to one of these events is a deciding factor in your trip.

Planning your hotel around your trip

If you are planning to walk the Fen Edge Trail, keep an eye on trail conditions; if you are including a tour at Quy Hall or an event at Quy Park, take into account the advance booking requirement or the changing event dates. This helps you match your preferred travel period to the relevant planning requirements before searching for hotels.
