Battlesbridge: Tide Mill, Bridge and Motorcycle History
Accommodation in Battlesbridge
Battlesbridge brings together the history of its tide mill, the River Crouch, historic buildings and a rail connection via Wickford. Motorcycle history and the Antique Centre add to the village’s attractions. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Battlesbridge, you can start by considering whether your trip is more about travelling by train, the architectural history by the river or motorcycles.
Travelling to Battlesbridge by train
Battlesbridge station opened in 1889. It has a single platform and is on the Crouch Valley Line. Trains to London Liverpool Street require a change at Wickford. If you’re travelling by train, you can factor Wickford into your plans and check the timetable for your travel date. This way, you can account for both the local station and the necessary change.
Tide mill and historic buildings
The old Battlesbridge tide mill is the surviving part of a tide mill dating from the 1830s and is an important, rare surviving example in Essex. West of the mill are the former granary and drying kiln. Both buildings were built in the early 19th century and are listed Grade II. Together, the mill, granary and kiln illustrate different aspects of the area’s architectural history.
The River Crouch and the landscape
Battlesbridge road bridge crosses the tidal River Crouch and dates from around 1872. Another structure connected to the river is the dam wall of the building known as “Old Tide Mill and Dam Wall Attached to North”. It is made mainly of red brick, has a stone coping and includes openings for controlling the tides. The wall extends north across the River Crouch. The bridge and dam wall differ in form and function, but both relate to the tidal river.
The area of Battlesbridge designated as a Conservation Area includes marshland and drainage areas on both sides of the River Crouch. The river is therefore both a point of reference for individual structures and part of the surrounding landscape. The buildings and the land on both banks can be considered as distinct but connected aspects of the area’s history: historic use, tidal control and the riverside landscape.
Motorcycle history and antiques
Battlesbridge Motorcycle Museum displays vintage motorcycles, accessories and memorabilia relating to motorcycle history. Unlike the mill, bridge and dam wall, the focus here is on vehicles and related objects. This gives the visit a different historical focus from the buildings along the River Crouch.
The Battlesbridge Antique Centre is home to more than 80 dealers across various historic buildings and courtyards; the number of dealers may change. Free parking is available in designated areas at Battlesbridge Antiques Centre. If you’re travelling by car, you can include this parking option in your plans.
To decide whether Battlesbridge is right for your trip, you can consider travel and interests separately. The rail connection via Wickford is a specific transport link; the mill, bridge and dam wall represent the history of the river and its buildings, while the motorcycle museum offers a different focus.
