Stranocum and the Dark Hedges
Accommodation in Stranocum
For your trip to Stranocum, you can explore several themes: the history of Gracehill House and the Dark Hedges, the architectural heritage of Stranocum Hall, and The Bush circular route through the River Bush valley. The details range from a beech avenue with a known planting date to two early medieval ringforts and a route through the landscape.
Gracehill House and the Dark Hedges
Gracehill House was built around 1775 by James Stuart and named after his wife, Grace Lynd. The estate has a royal history dating back to the early 17th century. The construction date and earlier history should therefore be distinguished: the estate’s royal history predates the house.
The former entrance to Gracehill House is now a public, beech-lined road known as the Dark Hedges. The beech trees, planted around 1775, stand on both sides of a long avenue near the house. Bregagh Road runs through the Dark Hedges. Bregagh Road is open to pedestrians only; vehicles are not allowed. The Dark Hedges also served as a filming location for Game of Thrones, representing the Kingsroad. The historic approach and the filming history are therefore two distinct aspects.
Stranocum Hall and older traces
Stranocum Hall was built in the mid-18th century by the Hutchinson family and is constructed in the classical Georgian style. The Hall includes a local history museum. The Hutchinsons’ connection with the Stranocum area dates back to the 16th century. There are also two early medieval ringforts near the Hall. These add an archaeological point of reference from a much earlier period to the Hall’s architectural and family history.
Two houses, different historical connections
Both buildings date from the 18th century, but their historical connections differ. For Gracehill House, the focus is on James Stuart, its naming after Grace Lynd and the estate’s earlier royal history. Stranocum Hall is associated with the Hutchinson family, whose connection with the area predates the building. The houses can therefore be compared through their different family connections and historical time spans.
The Bush: a circular route
The Bush is a circular route through the Stranocum countryside in the River Bush valley. Its circular layout distinguishes it from Bregagh Road, which runs through the Dark Hedges as a public road. This gives you a practical distinction to consider when planning your trip: a road section versus a circular route through the landscape. If you plan to follow The Bush, check the route conditions in advance, as they may change.
