Accommodation in Stockton-On-Tees
Discover Stockton-On-Tees through a wide variety of experiences: historic market culture, collections and performances sit alongside parkland and long trails. When planning your hotel stay, it helps to decide what brings you here first – perhaps a festival, museums and markets, or time in the great outdoors.
Culture, Markets and Events
Stockton Market, also known as “The Queen of the North”, takes place on the High Street on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. More than 100 independent stalls offer quality goods and fresh produce; the number of stalls and selection may vary. Traditional markets in Stockton-on-Tees have been bringing visitors to town centres for more than 700 years – visiting the market connects today’s offering with a long local market tradition.
Preston Park Museum presents collections on social and industrial history, costumes, weapons and armour, paintings and decorative art across four themed galleries. Specific exhibitions may change. Preston Park Museum and Grounds also includes a recreated Victorian street; the grounds offer walks through woodland and riverside landscapes. As access arrangements may change, check them before your visit. The ParkMade programme includes workshops in historic crafts throughout the year; individual workshops may vary.
The Stockton Flyer is an automated mechanical sculpture commissioned by Stockton Borough Council in 2013 to celebrate the town’s railway and industrial history. It appears daily at 1 pm behind Stockton Town Hall. As operating arrangements may change, check the schedule before your visit. Another occasion to plan around is the Stockton International Riverside Festival (SIRF): this free festival of outdoor arts and street theatre takes place annually in early August and also features dance, circus and music. The programme varies, so check the festival dates against your travel dates.
The calendar highlights the difference between two experiences: Stockton Market is listed for Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, while SIRF takes place in early August. If either is the focus of your trip, check the current market offerings or festival dates to match your travel dates.
The ARC offers a music programme featuring rock, pop, soul, jazz, folk and indie. Its cinema shows mainstream, arthouse, independent and world cinema, and also broadcasts ballet and opera productions; individual screenings and broadcasts vary. Stockton Globe offers another perspective on the cultural scene as a Grade II listed Art Deco theatre.
Parkland and Trails
A river and wetland restoration project was completed at Billingham Beck Valley Country Park in 2024–25. It improved biodiversity and water quality and reconnected the beck with its natural floodplain. The work also involved removing a historic weir, reopening around 55 kilometres of upstream habitat for fish migration. Visitor improvements delivered include new and refurbished footpaths, improved drainage, and new steps, benches and gates.
Wynyard Woodland Park stretches for more than three miles from the edge of Thorpe Thewles to Tilery Wood near Wynyard. It has more than ten miles of trails; its main cycle path forms part of National Cycle Network Route 1. Wynyard Planetarium & Observatory is also located in the park. Trail conditions, routes and signage may change, so it is a good idea to check current notices before setting out.
Ropner Park has been fully restored to its Victorian splendour. You can stroll by the lake and along tree-lined avenues. The Friends of Ropner Park organise bandstand concerts and other events; specific dates may vary. Cowpen Bewley Woodland Country Park has woodland, ponds, a lake, a meadow and hills. A beck runs along the park boundary, providing a suitable habitat for waterfowl, dragonflies, hares and foxes. For a distinct historical perspective, the Cowpen Bewley Heritage Trail offers glimpses of medieval open fields and the Old School House, built in 1874.
