Maryport brings together harbour and coastal scenery with traces of Roman, maritime and industrial history. The town lies on the edge of the Solway Coast National Landscape; from the harbour, views stretch across the Solway Firth towards Scotland. This gives you a choice of different interests when planning your trip: collections and architectural history, routes by the water, or activities by bike and on the golf course.

Harbour and Coastal Scenery

The accessible promenade is ideal for a scenic walk with the family. You can also stroll along the quay and explore the harbour. From the harbour, you can see towards Scotland. Maryport Coastal Park offers coastal views, as well as flora and fauna, adding to the ways you can experience the landscape by the water.

The tide level is crucial when crossing the Ellenfoot footbridge: at low tide, you can walk across the bridge. Plan your crossing around the tides. A longer coastal route runs from Maryport to Allonby and forms part of the King Charles III England Coast Path National Trail. If you prefer cycling, you can explore a section of Hadrian’s Cycleway – Route 72 from Maryport. These are different routes and activities; choose according to the type of exercise you have in mind for your stay.

Art, Roman Heritage and Maritime History

The permanent exhibition at Shipping Brow Gallery features the largest public display of paintings by Percy Kelly and William Mitchell. The sculpture Alauna Aurora stands at South Quay, on the harbourfront. Its design draws on Maryport’s Roman, mining, railway and shipbuilding past. In the evening, the sculpture is illuminated in colour; the lighting display is visible throughout the surrounding area.

Senhouse Roman Museum offers another glimpse into the town’s Roman past: its collection includes Roman military altars, sculptures and objects that tell of Roman life and beliefs on the edge of the empire. The Battery at Senhouse Roman Museum was built in 1885 as a training centre for Royal Navy gunnery crews. At the southern corner of Furnace Road, a monument comprises a group of six coke ovens dating from the mid-18th century. The renovated Christ Church opened as a Maritime Museum in 2025. More Things to Do and Practical Planning

Maryport Golf Club also brings together different landscape views: the course has nine links holes and nine parkland holes. To the west, there are views of the Solway Firth coast; to the east, views of the Lake District. The two groups of holes and the views in different directions give the golf course a different focus from a harbour walk or a visit to the collections.

In 2026, Lake District Coast Aquarium is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm, except on 25 and 26 December. Check opening hours before your visit. Maryport also hosts the Taste Cumbria Maryport Festival each year; check the specific dates for your travel year. If you arrive by train, Maryport railway station is just a ten-minute walk from the promenade. These details can help you take account of sightseeing, event dates and time by the water in your plans.
