If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Westhoughton, the town’s attractions can help guide your decision. Memorials, historic buildings and parks offer different points of interest: the memory of a mining disaster and those killed in war sit alongside architectural history and opportunities to spend time outdoors. Consider whether memorials and architecture or walking paths and Crown Green Bowls will shape your stay more. The details help you distinguish between these interests.

Memorials in Westhoughton

The Pretoria Pit Disaster Memorial commemorates the 344 men and boys who lost their lives in an explosion at the Pretoria Pit in Westhoughton on 21 December 1910. It also serves as a gravestone for 24 unidentified bodies. This links remembrance of an event on a specific date with the memory of other victims. Westhoughton War Memorial commemorates 197 local servicemen who lost their lives in the First World War. The structure, with steps and a rear wall, is Grade II listed. The two memorials therefore differ both in the events they commemorate and in the people they remember.

Historic buildings and their history

The White Lion pub dates from the early 19th century. Alterations made to its public and private areas in the 1920s are remarkably well preserved. The White Lion was also once Westhoughton’s post office. Its architectural history therefore offers several points of interest: the pub’s early date, the preserved later alterations and its former role as a post office. Together, these reveal different aspects of the history of a single building.

Higher Landedmans, The Bethel and Westhoughton Town Hall also offer different points of interest for architecture enthusiasts. Higher Landedmans is considered one of the oldest surviving groups of buildings in Westhoughton and was built approximately between 1609 and 1613. The Bethel is the oldest surviving church building in Westhoughton. Town Hall is notable for its Mannerist Renaissance design. These examples can be considered through different features: an approximate date, a building type and a specific architectural style. This means you don’t have to reduce the town’s history to a single period or building style.

Parks and local history

There are different ways to spend time outdoors, too. Westhoughton Central Park is a large park in the town centre and has a bowling green for Crown Green Bowls. Hall Lee Bank Park has easily accessible walking paths. The two parks offer different main activities: a walk or Crown Green Bowls. If you’d like to include a park visit in your stay, you can choose based on the activity.

Westhoughton Library is another place to visit for local history resources. Various materials on the town’s history are available on request at the reception desk. This is an opportunity to explore the town’s historical topics in greater depth through local resources; ask at the reception desk about the local history materials.
