Lochgilphead lies at the head of the short loch, Loch Gilp. This inlet is on the western shore of the much larger Loch Fyne. The town’s history is also linked to its position on the water: Lochgilphead was laid out as a planned town in the late 18th century and became more significant after the nearby Crinan Canal opened. The canal was originally built as an alternative route for sailors, allowing them to avoid the arduous journey around the Mull.

Canal culture and outdoor activities

From town, you can walk or cycle to Crinan along the scenic towpath of the Crinan Canal. The route connects the canal’s history with a practical activity: the waterway served as an alternative to sailing around the Mull, and today the path along the canal leads to Crinan on foot or by bike.

In town, Lochgilphead Front Green offers another place to get active. The new facilities are designed for walking and cycling, and the area is also an important recreational and social meeting place for the community. Front Green opened to the public in August 2022. For another activity in Lochgilphead, there is MACPool: the pool is 20 metres long and has four lanes. The operator offers public swimming sessions and swimming lessons for all ages and abilities; there is also a soft-play area for children. If you would like to swim, check the public swimming times in advance.

History and day trips nearby

The planned town’s history is also connected to heritage conservation. The Lochgilphead Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme supports property owners in the designated funding area with grants for repairs to historic buildings. This connects the town’s historical origins with an initiative focused on preserving older buildings.

For a focus on archaeological and historic monuments, Kilmartin Glen is six miles north of Lochgilphead. The glen contains more than 350 monuments. The nearby woodland paths offer a different experience: Kilmory Castle Gardens are about a mile to the east and offer woodland walks. In Achnabreac Forest, numerous marked trails wind through ancient woodland. Lochgilphead Golf Club offers views of the Mid Argyll landscape.
