Newmilns brings together a mural celebrating lace-making, historic buildings and a network of walking trails. These themes are quite distinct: the mural reflects the town’s heritage, the buildings offer specific architectural details, and the Irvine Valley Trails follow individual paths or longer routes through several places. For your stay, you can therefore decide first whether to focus on local history, architectural styles or walking.

Lace-making in the townscape

The “Lace and Town Crest” mural is at 133 Main Street, next to Lady Flora’s Institute in Newmilns. It celebrates the town’s lace-making heritage and was completed in August 2025. As well as “Lace”, the title also refers to the Town Crest. The mural is part of the Love Newmilns walking trail, linking the artwork with the route. Its address and connection to the trail offer two precise points of reference for locating the artwork in Newmilns.

Buildings and their features

Morton Hall is a public hall in the Jacobethan style, with a gable. The building includes a large public hall with a stage. Morton Hall thus combines a named architectural style with a specifically described interior. Brown’s Institute includes a library and leisure rooms. The institute is attributed to Martha Brown, the last member of the Lanfine landowning family, who handed it over to the Burgh of Newmilns. Newmilns Town House, also known as the Old Council House, has a domed bellcote and a weather vane dating from 1739. The year refers to the weather vane. Gables, bellcotes and domes describe architectural features; stages, libraries and leisure rooms describe other aspects of these buildings. This allows you to distinguish the buildings by their different details.

Viaduct and walking trails

Newmilns Railway Viaduct provides a different architectural focal point. It is a continuous viaduct with 26 arches, built on a curved incline and spanning the river and The Green. In contrast with the individual features of the buildings, the viaduct is characterised by its continuous form and repeated arches.

The Irvine Valley Trails network includes 14 Valley Trails. You can walk them individually or combine them into longer routes. The trails are waymarked, and there are information points along the way. Geographically, the trail network links Hurlford in the west with Darvel and Loudoun Hill in the east, via Galston and Newmilns. This gives you the choice of individual trails as well as longer connections. Waymarkers and information points help you find your way and provide additional information along the route.

Local history with the Heritage App

The Newmilns Heritage App complements the buildings and trails with playful activities. It offers a family game with clues in the streets, as well as a cemetery treasure hunt at Loudoun Paris Church. Each activity has a different focus: the game involves clues in the streets, while the treasure hunt takes place in the churchyard. If you plan to take part in one of these activities, this distinction can help you choose.

If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay in Newmilns, you can choose the focus of your trip to suit your interests: would you like to concentrate mainly on local history and architecture, or set aside time for individual trails or longer walking routes?
