Discover Dunvegan
Accommodation in Dunvegan
Dunvegan appeals to travellers who want to include history, landscaped gardens and walks in their trip. Dunvegan Castle is the main attraction; other highlights include the Giant Angus MacAskill Museum in the village centre, St Mary's Church and Burial Ground in Dunvegan, and trails in the surrounding area. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can choose based on whether the castle and gardens, local history or outdoor activities will shape your itinerary.
Dunvegan Castle and its history
Dunvegan Castle is Scotland's oldest continuously inhabited castle and has been the ancestral seat of the Clan MacLeod chiefs for 800 years. Its structure comprises at least ten building phases, from the 13th century through to the 1850s. Visitors can choose between guided tours and self-guided visits with a castle guide. This lets you explore the castle's long building history in a way that suits your travel plans.
In the centre of Dunvegan, the Giant Angus MacAskill Museum displays exhibits, personal artefacts, photographs and larger-than-life representations of Angus MacAskill. The collection was curated by the MacAskill family. St Mary's Church and Burial Ground in Dunvegan is also designated a Scheduled Monument. The museum and church add cultural sites in the village to a visit to the castle; the museum is dedicated to Angus MacAskill.
Gardens and practical visit planning
The landscaped grounds of Dunvegan Castle include woodland, a formal garden, a walled garden and a water garden. The formal gardens cover five acres and were laid out in the 18th century; the walled garden was created around 1810. In the water garden, winding paths cross bridges over the streams. The different garden areas offer a focus distinct from the castle's building history, with an emphasis on design and landscape.
Activities for children in the gardens include the Wild Wood Trail. The gardens are accessible at ground level from designated parking spaces in the castle car park opposite the main entrance and ticket office. However, some garden paths are steep due to the terrain. Dunvegan Castle & Gardens is open daily from 1 April to 15 October, 10:00 am to 5:30 pm; last admission is at 5:00 pm. As seasonal opening hours may change, check the times before your visit.
Walking and nature
Two trails in the Dunvegan area differ in both length and difficulty. The Dun Fiadhairt Walk is a short, moderate 3 km hike to the remains of an Iron Age broch. Dun Fiadhairt is designated a Scheduled Monument. The trail to the Coral Beaches at Claigan is 4 km long and rated easy. The shorter of the two trails therefore leads to the broch, while the longer one leads to the beaches at Claigan. Local conditions may change.
The Dunvegan Two Churches Walk is considered an easy hike through woodland and open moorland. It starts at the Duirinish Church of Scotland car park in the village of Dunvegan. Trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out.
A boat trip is another way to experience nature: Dunvegan Castle offers a 25-minute trip to a colony of harbour seals in Loch Dunvegan. The boats depart from the pier below the castle. Departures run daily between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm; the last departure is at 4:30 pm. Sea and weather conditions affect operations, and seasonal conditions may change. Check departure times before your visit.
Location and directions
Dunvegan Castle & Gardens is one mile north of the village of Dunvegan in the northwest of the Isle of Skye. For road directions: the A850 begins at the old Dunvegan Pier, runs around the grounds of Dunvegan Castle and meets the A863 south of the village of Dunvegan. Together with the museum in the village centre and the walking trails in the surrounding area, these offer different points of reference for planning your trip, depending on whether you want to focus on the castle and gardens, a visit to the village or a walk.
