Forest trails and routes around Grantown-on-Spey

The community paths of Grantown-on-Spey run through the community-managed pinewoods of Anagach to the River Spey. Anagach Woods are also particularly important for the rare and endangered capercaillie. Seasonal visitor restrictions may apply; before visiting, check whether any relevant guidance needs to be followed.

The Kylintra Meadow Path is a 1.2-kilometre circular route. Its landscape features include a stream, a large pond, woodland and a former meadow. The path starts at Woodlands Terrace; parking is available in a roadside lay-by. If road conditions change, check local access conditions in advance.

The route lengths differ considerably: the Kylintra Meadow Path is a short circular route, while the Dava Way is 24 miles, or 38 kilometres, long. This walking and off-road cycling route runs between Forres and Grantown-on-Spey. On the Speyside Way, a separate section is designated as the route from Grantown to Nethy Bridge.

The Discover Grantown Walking Tours also bring together several of these landscape features: the guided route leads from the town centre through Anagach Forest to the River Spey and back to the centre. This tour links the woodland and river with the town centre. Check whether booking is available before your trip.

Planned town and historic sites

Grantown-on-Spey was founded as a planned village in 1765. It was intended both for small-scale linen production and as a centre for local fairs and markets. These two purposes offer a specific insight into the economic and market role envisaged for the town at its founding.

The Grantown-on-Spey Heritage Trail includes important town buildings and is marked by 21 plaques. Individual shops and exhibitions may change. The trail provides a historical point of reference, while the plaques and buildings mark the stops along the route.

Among the named buildings is Inverallan Church, a cruciform Gothic Revival church built between 1884 and 1886. Its history also includes the reason for its construction: Caroline, the Dowager Countess of Seafield, had it built in memory of her husband and son, the 7th and 8th Earls of Seafield. Architecture and family remembrance are intertwined here, without reducing the church to a single historical function.

Spey Bank Studio is located in a renovated former Bank of Scotland branch. The studio includes an art gallery, flexible workshop spaces, an artist’s studio and a pottery. Grantown Museum is an interactive museum in the Scottish Highlands and complements the themes of art and architecture with its own connection to local history.

Whisky and other guided experiences

Cairn Distillery’s visitor experiences cover the production and maturation of Scotch whisky; tastings are also offered. Check the conditions in advance for tours; age restrictions apply. The site also has an outdoor trail from which visitors can experience the landscape of Cairngorms National Park. Whisky and landscape come together at the same site, but are distinct parts of the visit.

Another guided activity is offered by Cairngorms Activities near Grantown-on-Spey: gorge walking through waterfalls, pools and rocky river channels. Alongside the designated walking trails, this activity broadens the range of nature experiences; the described water and rock formations are specific to gorge walking.
