Fauldhouse between woodland paths and mining history
Accommodation in Fauldhouse
Fauldhouse offers a range of options for a stay: woodland paths on former mining land, a cycle route and various sporting facilities. If you are looking for a hotel, you can plan your stay around whether you mainly want to walk, cycle, play golf or use sports facilities.
Woodland and mining history
Fauldhouse Forest is in the moorland between Fauldhouse and Whitburn. The land was previously used for coal, iron and clay mining. Knowes Colliery Woodland is different: this 18-hectare conifer woodland on the southern edge of Fauldhouse was established on former coal-mining land. The two locations are distinct: Fauldhouse Forest lies between the communities, while Knowes Colliery Woodland is on the southern edge of Fauldhouse.
A 1.2-kilometre paved circular trail runs through Knowes Colliery Woodland. Benches, signage, information boards and improved access points complement the route. When planning your visit, you can take into account both the trail’s exact length and the facilities available. The woodland is next to Fauldhouse station and is about a two-minute walk from there.
Walking and cycling routes
The western section of the WL24 Fauldhouse Rail Path offers views across Greenburn Golf Course and the hills beyond. The B7010 cycle path offers a different way to get around: it runs off-road between Fauldhouse and Longridge and was completed in October 2018. These details describe two different planning options: a paved circular trail of a stated length and a cycle route connecting two communities.
The views along the route also differ from a stay in the woodland. If you are interested in the landscape and the route, the western section of the WL24 offers views across the golf course and the hills beyond; the B7010, by contrast, connects to Longridge. This lets you choose according to your preferred activity without treating the two routes as the same.
Traces of mining
Extensive deep mining began in the area around Fauldhouse and Whitburn in the 1840s and 1850s, initially for iron ore. Together with the former mining land of Fauldhouse Forest, this history provides a backdrop to the landscape you can experience when visiting the woodland areas. There is also a memorial bench to the victims of the Second World War at Fauldhouse War Memorial. In March 2026, the memorial bench was reported as newly installed.
Sports facilities and golf
Fauldhouse Partnership Centre has a 3G artificial turf pitch. It can be divided into three small-sided pitches for seven-a-side football or a full-size pitch for eleven-a-side football. The pitch layout therefore offers a clear choice between small-sided and full-size games. The Centre’s sports hall can also be hired; check with the Centre for availability and prices.
Fauldhouse Swimming Pool has a steam room. If you plan to swim or use the steam room during your stay, check current opening times and prices before visiting. This way, you can include the facility as a separate activity rather than treating it as one of the outdoor activities.
Greenburn Golf Club has an 18-hole course combining parkland and moorland. It measures 6,067 yards, and the course is rated par 71. The club has been at its current location for more than 50 years. As course details may change, check the latest information before playing a round.
