Drumin: Castle, Rivers and Historic Traces
Accommodation in Drumin
Drumin is a destination for travellers who want to explore historic architecture and the landscape around Glenlivet together. Drumin Castle overlooks the confluence of the rivers Livet and Avon. The local story also includes the Drumin Circular Path, which leads into Drumin Woods, and the history of a former distillery at Upper Drumin Farm. Together, these span the period from medieval architecture to whisky history.
Drumin Castle and its architecture
Drumin Castle is a medieval tower house, probably built in the late 14th century by a member of the Stewart family. Elements of a corbelled structure remain at the top of the wall, along with fragments of the parapet. Corbels project from the masonry, while the parapet forms the upper edge of the wall. A barrel vault survives on the ground floor. Window openings and fireplaces are also part of the structure; some of these features still have moulded details. A barrel vault is a vaulted ceiling, while mouldings are shaped contours on architectural elements. Together, these features show several aspects of the architecture: the overall form of the tower house, the top of the masonry and individual decorative details.
River landscape and historic role
Drumin Castle overlooks the confluence of the rivers Livet and Avon near Glenlivet. The site was also positioned to command important valleys and river crossings on the Avon and Dee. Both perspectives fit together, but answer different questions: the confluence describes the landscape around the castle, while the valleys and crossings explain the strategic role of its location. This distinction is useful for understanding the local history, as it places Drumin in context both as a river landscape and through its historic function.
Drumin Circular Path and Community Orchard
The Drumin Circular Path starts at the Drumin Castle car park, leads into Drumin Woods and crosses the river via a large wooden footbridge. This gives you a clearly identified starting point and river crossing; the route also leads into Drumin Woods. If you would like to plan a walk as well as explore the architecture, you can make this circular route a focus of your stay.
The Glenlivet Community Orchard is in the walled garden behind Drumin Castle and serves as a picnic spot on sunny days. It offers a different experience from the circular walk: the orchard is a weather-dependent picnic option, while the walk, with its woodland and river crossing, appeals to a different interest.
Distillery history and planning your visit
The old distillery at Upper Drumin Farm operated from 1824 to 1859. This period adds a distinctly later historical dimension than the castle’s presumed date of construction. If you are exploring Drumin for its history, you can view the tower house’s medieval architectural history and the later distilling period as two distinct eras.
