Strathaven – History and Nature in a Market Town
Accommodation in Strathaven
Strathaven combines the history of a market town with parks, cultural attractions and a green, hilly countryside. The town is known for its weaving and agricultural industries. When planning your stay, you can focus on different interests: historical sites, time in the park, local events or activities around Strathaven Airfield.
Market Town History and Historic Sites
Strathaven’s origins date back to a medieval settlement near St Mary’s Chapel, which is dated to around 1001. The town’s later history can also be traced through specific places: Strathaven Green Street East Parish Church was built around 1820, extensively renovated in 1877, and has a church tower dated to 1843.
The John Hastie Museum tells local residents and visitors the story of Strathaven. Another way to explore the town’s history is the Strathaven Heritage Trail. It offers insights into the events, industries and people that shaped Strathaven. Strathaven Cemetery is also associated with the Covenanting Trail.
Parks and Trails Around Strathaven
Strathaven Park consists of the connected areas of John Hastie Park and George Allan Park. Features of George Allan Park include a boating pond, a miniature railway and an ornate cast-iron bandstand. The miniature railway was built in 1949 by the Strathaven Model Railway Society; the bandstand was installed in 1902. The park also has children’s play areas, a sensory garden with wooden sculptures and a fitness area.
Local walking and cycling routes start at Common Green in the heart of the town. Strathaven is bordered to the south by the River Avon, a tributary of the Clyde; the surrounding countryside is green and hilly. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider the town’s history and outdoor activities as separate themes, without needing to combine them into a single outing.
Flight Simulator and Golf
Strathaven Airfield lies on the outskirts of the town and has a grass runway used by microlights and light aircraft. Flight Sim Scotland operates a flight simulator there, featuring the cockpit of an aircraft type also used in flight training. The cockpit is a real, full-size model with working instruments. Sessions are conducted one-on-one with a professional instructor.
Strathaven Golf Club offers another activity: its course is gently undulating and tree-lined, and its greens meet USGA standards. When planning a trip around your personal interests, you can consider these sporting options as separate activities alongside the historic sites and parks.
Events and Travel Planning
Recurring events include Hangarfest, a music festival in Strathaven showcasing local talent. Strathaven Gala Week takes place annually and includes a gala parade and a family day. The Strathaven Balloon Festival is also held annually, traditionally on the last weekend in August. If an event is a key part of your trip, check the dates for your intended travel year in advance.
