Trearddur: Beaches, Nature Reserve and Sailing
Accommodation in Trearddur
Trearddur Bay combines beaches and designated bathing areas with a nature reserve, kayaking opportunities and sailing activities. If you are looking for a hotel in Trearddur, planned activities and travel dates can be important factors in your choice: a beach visit, a walk through the reserve and a sailing regatta vary by location and season. Plan around what you would like to do during your stay.
Beaches and nature reserve
Trearddur Bay has two beaches: Trearddur Beach and Porth Diana. Both have designated bathing areas where swimming is possible. Porth Diana is both one of these beaches and a nature reserve in a heathland habitat on Holy Island. This means Porth Diana combines a bathing area with a natural setting. A path runs through heathland and grassland in the area; the public path is uneven. If you plan to spend time in the reserve as well as swimming, take this underfoot condition into account.
Getting to Porth Diana
There is no parking directly at Porth Diana Nature Reserve. Parking is available on Ravenspoint Rd, from where you can walk along the bay to the reserve. Getting there therefore involves parking on the road and walking along the bay. Allow time for this walk separately from the time you plan to spend in the bathing areas.
Kayaking and sailing
There are kayaking opportunities around Trearddur and nearby Holy Island, and the area has an international reputation for them. Motorised watercraft are subject to a separate requirement: they must be registered in Trearddur Bay before they can be launched. As requirements may change, check this requirement before your trip. Trearddur Bay Sailing Club promotes sailing and sailing races, and offers social events for the whole family. Every August, the club holds a sailing regatta in Trearddur Bay. Its sailing season is focused on four summer weeks from late July to late August.
Practical information about the village
Trearddur Bay’s public toilets are at the village’s main car park on Lôn St Ffraid and are operated by Isle of Anglesey County Council. Lon Isallt Children's Play Park is a free outdoor playground located directly opposite the RNLI Lifeboat Station. Dogs must be kept on a lead on Trearddur Bay Promenade from 1 May to 30 September; check the seasonal rule before your trip.
When to travel: rules and sailing calendar
The dates help with different decisions: the club holds its annual regatta in August and focuses its sailing season on four summer weeks from late July to late August. By contrast, the seasonal lead requirement on the promenade applies from 1 May to 30 September. August therefore falls within the period when dogs must be kept on a lead. If you are visiting the promenade with a dog and travelling for the regatta, take both points into account when planning your dates.
