Accommodation in Scalby
Scalby combines a traditional village layout with historic buildings, distinctive landscape features and recurring events. The Cinder Track also offers a unique point of interest for planning your trip. If you are looking for hotels in Scalby, you can first consider whether you would rather plan your stay around the village’s character, an event date or the route.
Village Layout and Historic Buildings
The Scalby Conservation Area was designated in 1979 for its special architectural or historic interest. A traditional, closely built village layout defines the centre; there are also many old trees and hedges. The oldest surviving buildings in Scalby, apart from the Church of St Laurence, date from the 18th century. The current street network also has a long history: it was already in place at the time of the Inclosure Award of 1777. The buildings and street pattern thus offer two specific ways to understand the village’s historic character.
High Mill Farm is another historic building. The group of buildings is Grade II listed and includes an improved watermill dating from the early 19th century. High Mill Farm was formerly known as Scalby High Mill; the present mill building is thought to have been built around 1810.
Landscape Between Scalby and Newby
Scalby Beck and its undeveloped banks form a distinct divide between Newby and Scalby. The Sea-Cut path offers north-facing views of the village; these views are an important part of Scalby’s landscape setting. The two features show different aspects of the area: the beck separates the two places, while the views from the path show the village within its landscape setting.
The Cinder Track and Outdoor Art
The Cinder Track is a 21-mile route from Scarborough to Whitby. There are six multi-part outdoor artworks on the section between Scarborough and Scalby. The 21 miles refer to the full route, while the six artworks are located on the section mentioned. The installations may be adapted through subsequent maintenance or changes.
In Scalby, sections of the Cinder Track run along public roads. If you include the route in your plans, check the local route and conditions before setting out, as both can change. This keeps in view both the length of the full route and the section between Scarborough and Scalby’s particular connection with art, without confusing the two details.
Scalby Fair and Scalby Walk
Scalby Fair is an annual week-long festival that culminates in a large village street fair. The street fair features more than 50 stalls, music, dancing and special attractions for children. The number of stalls and the programme may vary from one year to the next. So if you would like to plan your trip around the Fair, check the details for the relevant year.
Scalby Walk also takes place annually, on Easter Monday. For planning your dates, the Easter Monday date in the year you have in mind is the one that matters. The two events therefore differ mainly in their timing: the Fair lasts a week, while the Walk takes place on Easter Monday.
