When planning a trip to Érsekcsanád, you can use the landscape and history as a guide when choosing your destination. Veránka-sziget tells the story of how the course of the Danube changed; the history of the former Csanád points to a settlement whose surroundings have changed considerably as a result of river regulation. The town therefore offers different perspectives on the Danube. When looking for a hotel, this provides a practical framework: consider whether you are most interested in river landscapes, historical traces, or other cultural and natural themes in Bács-Kiskun.

Veránka-sziget and the course of the Danube

Veránka-sziget, which belongs to Érsekcsanád, covers 1,345 hectares. About 612 hectares of it are classified as a strictly protected area. The two figures describe different areas: the island’s total area and the part with strict protection status. This distinguishes the size of the island from the special designation applying to part of its area.

Veránka was formed when a bend in the Danube was cut off. An old, meandering river branch and a new, straight river branch enclose the island. Its shape is therefore closely connected to the changing course of the river: the two branches show how a cut-off bend in the Danube became an island. Those interested in river landscapes can see a clear connection here between the island’s present-day shape and how it was formed, without conflating it with other natural themes in the region.

Historical traces in the surrounding area

The former Csanád lay about five kilometres west of the present-day town, where the Danube riverbed now runs, in the area of Ófalu. As a result of river regulation, the Danube washed away a large part of Ófalu. A small area remained about five kilometres west of the present-day town, between the Vajas and the Danube near Révcsárda. The former location, the river’s present-day course, and the area that remains west of the present-day town belong to different stages of the same historical development.

The ensemble of the levee keeper’s house, pumping station, large oaks, and ornamental trees also shapes the impression of Érsekcsanád that visitors take away with them. Alongside the stories of the river and the settlement, this combination of buildings and trees offers another perspective on the town. Together with the stories of the river and the settlement, it adds another aspect to your own trip planning.

More nature and culture themes in Bács-Kiskun

The wider travel area of Bács-Kiskun offers distinct nature themes. Gemenc is home to a particularly dense breeding population of black storks. White-tailed eagles and imperial eagles are also among the area’s characteristic birds; the white-tailed eagle is listed in the Red List. This regional context distinguishes the birdlife of Gemenc from the specific features described for Veránka-sziget.

Another landscape feature is Lake Szelidi. This natural oxbow lake developed from a branch of the Danube after the Ice Age. The lake’s blue-green algae nature trail is open year-round to pedestrians and cyclists. Its twelve information stations cover the lake’s development, the properties of its water, the organisms living there, and the wildlife in the surrounding area. As local conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before your visit.

For culture and history, another route leads to Tiszaalpár. The Tiszaalpár, Földvár nature trail presents the history of the Bronze Age fortification of Tiszaalpári Földvár and the way of life of people in the Bronze Age. Tiszaalpári Földvár is a specially protected archaeological site in Bács-Kiskun; it was designated under Decree 3/2003. (I. 25.) NKÖM. These themes broaden the perspective on Bács-Kiskun without attributing the places or their distinctive features to Érsekcsanád.
