Homokmégy: Nature, Landscape and Local History
Accommodation in Homokmégy
Homokmégy combines a landscape shaped by water with traces of the Bronze Age, local folk art and opportunities to spend time outdoors. Őrjeg, Halomi-högy and several cultural sites each offer a different focus. When planning your stay, you can tailor your time to your interests, combining nature observation, local history and time at Székes-tó.
Landscape and Nature
Halomi-högy lies in the Homokmégy area and, at 106 m, is the highest point of the landscape unit. Bronze Age vessels were found there while vineyards were being cultivated. The finds establish a historical connection with the use of the vineyards.
Őrjeg formed from a former branch of the Danube and is also known by the names Sár, Turján and Vörös mocsár. It formed the eastern boundary of the landscape. The flood-control measures carried out since the beginning of the previous century significantly changed the character of what was once a water-rich area. Today, place names on the outskirts of Homokmégy are the main reminders of the former water landscape.
A diverse range of plant and animal life can be observed in Őrjeg, in the Homokmégy area. This brings views of present-day nature together with the history of a substantially altered wetland. The pilgrimage route passes through Homokmégy, adding a religious dimension to the area’s landscape themes.
Local History and Folk Art
The Homokmégyi Bemutatótér presents the history of local traditional dress and folk motifs, the area’s hunting heritage, old tools and the village’s past. It offers a cultural-historical perspective distinct from observing the landscape.
Folk art is on display at the homokmégyi tájház. If you plan to visit, check visiting arrangements in advance.
The restored Kálvária is on the outskirts of Homokmégy and can be visited. It offers a distinct religious focus alongside the cultural-history exhibitions. The church of the medieval village of Sármégy is located in Szentegyházpart, which belongs to Homokmégy.
The vessel find at Halomi-högy points to the Bronze Age; the church is associated with the medieval village of Sármégy. These two details reflect different periods in local history.
Time at Székes-tó
Székes-tó and its surroundings offer opportunities for picnicking. There is plenty of play equipment for families, and cooking together in a bogrács cauldron is also possible. Unlike the cultural-history sites, the lakeside combines picnicking with play opportunities and a shared activity.
The options for planning your day have different focuses: Őrjeg is about plant and animal life, Székes-tó offers picnicking and play, while the pilgrimage route provides a religious dimension to the journey.
Cheesemaking and Tasting
Cheesemaking and cheese tasting are the focus of the agrotourism demonstration house in Homokmégy. This adds a culinary focus to the historical and landscape themes. If you plan this activity specifically, check current visiting arrangements in advance.
