Orgovány: Nature Trail, Landscape and Regional Tradition
Accommodation in Orgovány
Orgovány combines a nature trail in the countryside with the habitat theme of the Orgoványi-rétek meadows. It also has a local food tradition that includes asparagus cultivation and the processing of elderberries. This gives your travel plans a clear connection to the area’s landscape, habitats and regional produce.
The Pimpó nature trail and the Orgoványi-rétek meadows
The Pimpó nature trail is located in the countryside outside Orgovány, is 4 km long and has five stations. It introduces visitors to the diverse habitats of the Orgoványi-rétek meadows. Its length, number of stations and subject matter provide concrete points of reference when you are considering how to include the trail in your travel plans.
The Orgoványi-rétek meadows are in the nearby area between Ágasegyháza and Orgovány. The landscape includes marshes, fens, wet pastures, saline areas and sand dunes. The wet meadows provide a habitat for the rare Metelka-medvelepke, or Metelka’s burnet moth. The nature theme thus extends from the trail and the diverse habitats to a distinctive species in the landscape.
Local food tradition
Orgovány is also associated with a distinctive asparagus pickle linked to asparagus cultivation, as well as jam made from processed elderberries. These products add a local food tradition to the picture of the area.
Culture and nature in Bács-Kiskun
Elsewhere in the wider travel destination of Bács-Kiskun, another route leads to Tiszaalpár: the Tiszaalpár, Földvár nature trail presents the history of the Bronze Age fortification of Tiszaalpári Földvár and the way of life of people in the Bronze Age. The archaeological site is specially protected; it was designated as such under Decree 3/2003. (I. 25.) NKÖM.
Another cultural attraction is the Kiskunhalasi Csipkeház és Csipkemúzeum (Kiskunhalas Lace House and Lace Museum). There you can learn about the history of Halas lace, which began in 1902, admire lacework dating back centuries and see the process of lace embroidery. Bács-Kiskun thus offers different perspectives: the Bronze Age fortification and way of life in Tiszaalpár, and lace art in Kiskunhalas.
The nature trails also differ in length and what they offer visitors. The Pimpó nature trail in Orgovány is 4 km long; the Boróka nature trail in Bugac measures 1,100 metres. Its information boards and interactive stations include a forest xylophone and a play telescope. The lengths provide a concrete comparison, while the named stations give you an additional picture of the Boróka nature trail.
Another nature destination is Lake Szelidi, a natural oxbow lake that developed after the Ice Age from an arm of the Danube. The blue-green algae nature trail at Lake Szelidi has twelve information stations covering the lake’s development, the properties of its water, the organisms that live there and the surrounding wildlife. It is open year-round to pedestrians and cyclists; local conditions can change, so it is advisable to check the current situation before visiting. Unlike the Pimpó nature trail, which introduces visitors to the habitats of the Orgoványi-rétek meadows, this trail focuses on the lake, its water and the life it supports.
