Bugac brings together themes of the Puszta, landscape exploration and cultural history. The different areas of focus can help you plan your stay: at the Puszta Kapuja Információs Központ, the emphasis is on sandy grasslands and herding life; the Boróka tanösvény combines landscape features with information panels and activity stations; and the Pásztormúzeum complements the nature themes with herding culture and architecture.

Exhibitions at the Puszta Kapuja

The Puszta Kapuja Információs Központ is located in Bugac opposite the Karikás Csárda and provides a starting point for exploring the Bócsa-Bugac buckavilága. Its two interactive exhibitions have different focuses: “Bugaci buckák között” introduces the wildlife and ecosystems of the Puszta, while “Pásztorélet” depicts the former world of herders. Ecological relationships and a way of life from the past are thus presented as distinct points of entry.

The centre also introduces visitors to sandy grasslands and their characteristic animal and plant species. Other topics include the history and changes of the landscape, as well as the everyday lives of the people who once lived there. Another strand explains why the local sandy areas were placed under nature protection and included in the Natura 2000 network. Nature, historical land use and landscape conservation can therefore be explored as interconnected themes.

Garden and Boróka tanösvény

The garden at the Puszta Kapuja Információs Központ features an insect hotel and several games, including an ecological board game. The garden complements the exhibitions with another format in which a nature-related topic is explored through play.

The Boróka tanösvény is 1,100 metres long and has information panels and activity stations. Examples include a forest xylophone and a play binocular. A short section passes small rises and dunes covered with white poplars. One branch of the nature trail forms part of a marked hiking route; its panels cover trees and the birdlife of dry sandy forests. The trail’s length, stations and landscape features offer different points of reference, depending on whether you are more interested in playful elements, the route itself, or details about plants and birds.

Pásztormúzeum: Herding Culture and Architecture

The dioramas at the Pásztormúzeum present the history and tools of extensive livestock farming, the everyday lives of herders and herding art. They also showcase the animal and plant life of the Bugac Puszta and sandy forests. The exhibitions thus place everyday human life alongside the natural world of the Puszta.

Standing on its own in the Puszta, the Pásztormúzeum is considered a valuable architectural monument and reflects architectural trends of the 1970s. Alongside the dioramas, the museum’s architecture therefore offers a distinct way to explore the area’s themes.

Garden and Historical Traces

At the Szerzetesek kertje of the Aranymonostor Látogatóközpont, you can stroll among aromatic and medicinal plants. A walk through the garden offers a different focus from the nature trail’s panels or the museum’s dioramas: here, the emphasis is on two groups of plants that you can walk among.

The monasteries of Péter and Pál are also part of Bugac’s historical context. They stood in the area of the present-day settlement, and little about them has been preserved in written records.
