Apostag – Synagogue, local history and the Danube surroundings
Accommodation in Apostag
Apostag offers several specific points of interest for a stay focused on history: a synagogue with a memorial exhibition, a cemetery in the garden of the Tájház, and a Reformed church on the site of a former rotunda. The Danube nearby also offers opportunities for hiking and weekend recreation. This gives you the choice of focusing your time on local history or also enjoying leisure activities in the surrounding area.
Synagogue, Tájház and church history
The synagogue is a prominent historic building in Apostag. It was declared a monument and then renovated between 1986 and 1988 according to plans by Péter Wirth. The building houses the Lajos Nagy Memorial Exhibition. If you would like to visit the exhibition, check the visiting arrangements in advance.
Another link to the past can be found in the garden of Apostag’s Tájház: it is home to a Jewish cemetery covering nearly half a hectare. Its location in the garden creates a spatial connection between the cemetery and the Tájház. Different forms of remembrance are therefore present for anyone exploring local history: the renovated synagogue, the memorial exhibition and the cemetery.
The present-day Reformed church also tells the story of an earlier building on the same site. It stands where the former rotunda once stood. Its foundations and reusable building materials were incorporated into the construction of the new church. This means the new building did not simply replace its predecessor: parts of the earlier structure were incorporated into it. Together with the synagogue, the church offers a second perspective on Apostag’s religious buildings, this time through the architectural connection between predecessor and successor.
Hiking and recreation by the Danube
The Danube near Apostag offers opportunities for hiking and weekend recreation. This adds a natural and leisure-focused dimension to the town’s historical attractions. When planning your stay, you can weigh these different priorities: local history alongside the options in the Danube area, without treating them as the same theme.
More cultural and natural attractions in Bács-Kiskun
The wider destination of Bács-Kiskun also offers a variety of attractions. In Tiszaalpár, the Tiszaalpár, Földvár educational trail introduces the history of the Bronze Age fortified settlement and the way of life of people in the Bronze Age. Tiszaalpári Földvár is a specially protected archaeological site in Bács-Kiskun; it received this designation under Decree 3/2003. (I. 25.) NKÖM. A reconstruction of an Árpád-era village in Tiszaalpár depicts the settlement layout discovered during local excavations. It was built to mark the millennium.
Another cultural highlight is the Kiskunhalas Lace House and Lace Museum. There, you can learn about the history of Halas lace, which began in 1902, view lacework dating back centuries and see the lace-making process. History, preserved pieces and production are all brought together here, distinguishing this attraction from Tiszaalpár’s archaeological sites.
For nature attractions, the Boróka educational trail in Bugac and Lake Szelid offer different experiences. The Boróka educational trail is 1,100 metres long and features information boards and interactive stations, including a forest xylophone and a play telescope. Lake Szelid is a natural oxbow lake that developed after the Ice Age from a branch of the Danube. The lake’s blue algae trail has twelve information stations covering the lake’s development, the characteristics of its water, the organisms that live there and the wildlife in the surrounding area. The trail is accessible on foot and by bicycle year-round, although local conditions may change.
The Természet Háza in Kecskemét, the visitor centre of Kiskunság National Park, is a useful starting point for exploring the park. It provides information about educational trails, visiting conditions for protected areas, ecotourism programmes and forest schools. The Pásztormúzeum is a specific destination: a dirt road leads there on foot from the Puszta Kapuja Information Centre, a distance of about 1.5 kilometres.
