Komló offers visitors different ways to explore the city’s history, culture and nature. These include exhibitions, a theatre and concert hall, historic buildings and mining memorials. Topics range from local history and natural science collections to regional embroidery motifs and events. Depending on your interests, you can plan your stay around collections, performances, architectural history or a specific event date.

Museums and the Nature of the Mecsek

The exhibitions at the KomlóVerzum Visitor Centre and the Museum Collection are open to everyone during opening hours, subject to an admission fee. Check visitor information and opening hours before your visit. The József Attila City Library and Museum Collection presents local history, natural science and temporary exhibitions. This brings local historical topics together with natural science, while temporary exhibitions add further subjects to the program.

The Museum Collection documents natural science research in the city and its surrounding area. It includes an archive, a rock collection, a paleontological collection, a microlepidoptera collection, archaeological finds and a specialist library. The holdings bring together geological and paleontological subjects with archaeological finds and specialist scientific literature. Those interested in the region’s nature can also explore the permanent exhibition “A Mecsek természetvilága” (“The Natural World of the Mecsek”), which presents the natural environment of the Mecsek.

Mining History and Buildings

Mining history is also present at memorial sites and outdoor exhibitions: memorials to mining history and open-air displays of machinery are spread throughout the city. Komló’s inventory of local values also includes patience bottles, associated with the town’s mining past and made by Gábor Farkas. The Díszítőművészeti Műhely (Decorative Arts Workshop) is another way of preserving local culture. Founded in 1978, the workshop preserves embroidery motifs known locally and across the county by making, teaching and maintaining them.

Jánosi Engel Adolf Castle is a late eclectic-style building constructed in 1900. It has been nationally protected since September 2011 and is largely preserved in its original form. At the same time, the castle is currently unused and in poor condition. Hasmányi Church, a 13th-century Gothic church ruin, offers another historical landmark.

Performances and Event Dates

The Komló Theatre and Concert Hall opened on November 5, 1982. It serves as a venue for performances by amateur and professional theatre companies, as well as artistic groups. From every seat in the auditorium, stage productions can be seen and heard clearly. If you are planning to attend a performance, check the date of the program you want to see.

The Komlói Bányásznapok (Komló Miners’ Days) is Komló’s largest cultural event celebrating tradition. The multi-day festival honors the city’s mining past and features concerts, family activities, exhibitions and community events. The International Sausage-Stuffing Festival takes place every year in early February. The 15th edition was announced for February 7, 2026; participating teams take an active part. If you are planning a later trip, check the relevant dates and program.
