In Hímesháza, folk traditions are featured alongside historic buildings and memorial sites. The Német Nemzetiségi Tájház Himesháza displays a collection of historic tools and everyday objects. Other specific points of interest include a Calvary chapel, the Roman Catholic church, a Székely Gate and a grave cross.

Folk collection and local history

The Tájház presents seven different occupations, as well as a weekly market, viticulture, harvest and mining. A Székely room with decorated bedding and colorful woven textiles complements the collection. Tools and everyday objects are displayed alongside the room’s textile design—two different ways of approaching the exhibition’s themes.

The historic buildings and memorial sites also differ in their purpose. The Roman Catholic church was built in 1754 by Bishop György Klimo in honor of Kisboldogasszony. A grave cross dating from 1775 on the church grounds commemorates the final resting place of Johann Michel Ahn. The Calvary chapel was built in 1798. There is also a Székely Gate in Hősök tér. The church, chapel and grave cross thus represent architectural history, dedication and personal remembrance.

More themes in the wider Baranya destination

In the wider Baranya destination, themes range from archaeological and modern culture to nature and food and wine. The early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae in Pécs includes decorated tombs from the 4th century. They were built as underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels and adorned with richly detailed Christian wall paintings.

Also in Pécs, the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter includes the exhibitions “Golden Age of Zsolnay” and “Pink Exhibition,” as well as an exhibition on the family and factory history. Activities for children include outdoor playgrounds, an interactive lab, a planetarium, the Bóbita Puppet Theatre, a ceramics painting workshop and courses at the Hercules Workshop. The freely accessible outdoor area can be entered and used free of charge during opening hours. If you plan to visit, check the opening hours beforehand.

Siklós Castle is one of Hungary’s best-preserved military complexes and also one of its most important Renaissance buildings. Modernization of the museum wing opened the previously inaccessible Gothic section to visitors. The “Art in Nature” program at Nagyharsány Sculpture Park offers a different cultural focus, with a guided tour of the park.

For nature and agriculture, the Ős-Dráva Visitor Center near Szaporca offers an interactive exhibition, a demonstration farm with hands-on management, and three themed educational trails. These provide information about traditional agriculture, the Ős-Dráva program and the wildlife along the Drava. The farm features native Hungarian domestic animals, including Hungarian Grey cattle, Mangalica pigs, Hucul horses, and old breeds of sheep and poultry.

The Wilderness Educational Trail along the Old Drava has a birdwatching and bird-ringing station, a viewpoint, a photography shelter, a covered activity area and several rest stops. The Kikerics Panorama Trail lets visitors move safely along the edge of the cliffs while protecting the park’s plants from trampling.

Food and wine are also part of the region’s offerings: in Villány’s cellar row, visitors can go from cellar to cellar all year round to sample wines and tasty dishes. Baranya therefore brings together a range of themes, from collections and architectural history to educational trails and wine tasting.
