A trip to Mohács can be shaped around several cultural themes: the winter Busójárás, the city’s ethnographic diversity and craft traditions. When planning a visit, you can consider this time-bound festival culture, a museum and distinctive ways of working separately. A historic memorial site is also nearby.

Busójárás, the City Museum and Crafts

Busójárás in Mohács is a six-day carnival held at the end of February to celebrate the end of winter. This timeframe is an important reference point when planning your visit. The festival offers a different focus from the permanent exhibition at the Kanizsai Dorottya Museum, which is dedicated to the ethnographic diversity of Mohács. This places a festival held annually in late February alongside a permanent exhibition theme.

The Busóudvar in the centre of Mohács also connects the place with specific craft themes. The activities offered there include mask carving, making Busó costumes and a ceramics workshop. These activities have different emphases: masks and costumes are linked to the Busó tradition, while the ceramics workshop introduces another craft. Together with the exhibition at the city museum, they offer different ways to explore culture and crafts in Mohács, without limiting the themes to the carnival.

The Szent Miklós vízimalom presents another form of traditional technology. Milling is carried out there using millstones, while preserving the technological level of the Middle Ages. The focus here is on the milling process and the technology used, setting the mill apart from both the festival and the museum and workshop themes. Those interested in crafts will therefore find several distinct points of connection in Mohács.

The Mohács National Memorial is located near the destination, on the battlefield. It commemorates the 1526 Battle of Mohács. Its current status is important when planning a visit: the memorial is temporarily closed for reconstruction.

More themes in the wider destination of Baranya

The wider destination of Baranya offers other cultural themes, including the early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae in Pécs. Its decorated tombs date from the 4th century. The underground burial chambers were built with above-ground memorial chapels and feature richly detailed Christian wall paintings. The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter is also in Pécs. Its exhibitions include “Golden Age of Zsolnay,” the “Pink Exhibition” and an exhibition on the history of the family and the factory. The freely accessible outdoor area can be entered and used free of charge during opening hours; check the opening hours before visiting.

The Ős-Dráva Visitor Centre near Szaporca focuses on nature and agriculture. It includes an interactive exhibition, an agricultural demonstration area with hands-on farming, and three themed educational trails. These introduce visitors to traditional agriculture, the Ős-Dráva programme and the wildlife along the Drava. Native Hungarian domestic animals are on display in the agricultural area, including Hungarian Grey cattle, Mangalica pigs, Hucul horses, and old breeds of sheep and poultry. The focus is therefore on landscape, agriculture and wildlife rather than urban history.

Siklós Castle is another Baranya destination for architecture and history. It is one of Hungary’s best-preserved military complexes and one of its important Renaissance buildings. Modernisation of the museum wing opened the previously inaccessible Gothic section to visitors. Villány’s wine-cellar row offers a different regional experience: visitors can go from cellar to cellar throughout the year to taste wines and food. These themes complement Mohács’s festival, museum and craft offerings with distinct cultural, nature and culinary experiences in the wider destination of Baranya.
