Cave, nature trail and lakes

Three specific topics can help you plan your trip: the developed main passage of Abaligeti-barlang, the Denevér E-tanösvény nature trail and two lakes with different uses. You can tailor your choices to a cave visit, route length and activities on the water.

The developed main passage of Abaligeti-barlang is 466 metres long and can be explored on foot in everyday clothing. Check the physical access conditions before your trip.

Three routes to choose from

The Denevér E-tanösvény nature trail offers three routes that differ in length, number of stations and stated duration:

  • The long route has 13 stations, covers 5 kilometres and takes 3 hours.
  • The medium route has 7 stations, covers 3 kilometres and takes 2 hours.
  • The short route has 5 stations, covers 2 kilometres and takes 1 hour.

For planning your time, the short route is the briefest option at one hour, while the long route is the longest at three hours. The medium route falls between them at two hours. The distances are similarly graduated, from 2 to 3 to 5 kilometres.

In the West Mecsek Landscape Protection Area, the nature trail explores topics related to Abaligeti-barlang, including geological features, karst phenomena and wildlife. Other topics include the effects of different land management practices on nature, natural forest regeneration and soil erosion processes. The trail’s themes therefore range from geology and wildlife to forest development and human land management.

Two lakes with different uses

The smaller lake, Abaligeti csónakázótó, is next to the cave entrance. Visitors can go boating and pedal boating there. These activities may depend on local operations, so check before your visit whether boating and pedal boating are available.

The larger lake, Abaligeti horgásztó, is across the road from the car park and is a popular fishing spot. The lakes therefore have different uses: boating and pedal boating are the main activities at the smaller lake, while the larger one is used for fishing.

Culture in the wider destination of Baranya

Those interested in cultural history as well as nature can visit the early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae in Pécs, within the wider destination of Baranya. It includes decorated tombs from the 4th century, built as underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels and adorned with richly detailed Christian wall paintings. The burial chambers, memorial chapels and wall paintings give the necropolis its archaeological and artistic focus.

Also in Pécs, the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter includes the “Golden Age of Zsolnay” and “Pink Exhibition” displays, as well as an exhibition on the family and factory history. The cultural quarter also offers children outdoor playgrounds, an interactive lab, a planetarium, the Bóbita Puppet Theatre, a ceramic painting workshop and classes at the Hercules Workshop. Alongside the exhibitions, visitors can therefore choose from a range of activities for children.
