Szellő: Rest Area, Pilgrim Route and Local History

At the southern edge of Szellő is a rest area with tables, benches and a fire pit. It can be reached via the Szent-Márton Pilgrim Route. The location and access answer two different orientation questions: Where is the site, and which route takes you there? If you plan to include the pilgrimage route in your trip, it is advisable to check the current trail conditions before setting out.

In the 16th century, a chapel stood on the site of today’s bell tower. It was later demolished, and the bell tower that stands there today was built in its place. The tower therefore marks the site of a former religious building, not a surviving chapel. A statue of Saint Florian stands at the northern end of Szellő. The marble monument “Könnyező felhő” commemorates people who were relocated from the town.

The locations of two notable landmarks can be compared directly: the rest area is at the southern edge of town, while the statue of Saint Florian is at the northern end. The town’s history also has several distinct themes, from the former chapel site to the remembrance of those who were relocated.

Culture and nature in the wider destination of Baranya

In the wider destination of Baranya, Pécs offers two distinct cultural experiences. The Early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae in Pécs includes decorated tombs from the 4th century. They were built as underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels and adorned with richly detailed Christian murals. The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter features the “Golden Age of Zsolnay” and “Pink Exhibition” displays, as well as an exhibition on the family and factory history. Activities for children include outdoor playgrounds, an interactive lab, a planetarium, the Bóbita Puppet Theatre, a ceramic painting workshop and classes at the Hercules Workshop. The outdoor area of the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter is free to access and use during opening hours; check the hours before your visit.

The Ős-Dráva Visitor Centre is located near Szaporca. It offers an interactive exhibition, a demonstration farm with hands-on agricultural activities, and three themed educational trails. These provide information about traditional farming, the Ős-Dráva Programme and wildlife along the Drava. The farm area features native Hungarian domestic animals, including Hungarian Grey cattle, Mangalica pigs, Hucul horses, and old breeds of sheep and poultry. The wilderness trail along the Old Drava has a birdwatching and bird-ringing station, a lookout point, a photography hide, a covered activity area and several rest stops.

Siklós Castle is one of Hungary’s best-preserved military complexes and one of the country’s most significant Renaissance buildings. Modernisation of the museum wing opened the Gothic section, which had previously been inaccessible to visitors. At Nagyharsány Sculpture Park, the “Art in Nature” programme includes a guided tour. The Kikerics Panorama Trail allows safe passage along the cliff edge while also protecting the park’s plant life from trampling.
