Sásd lies in the north of Baranya County on Main Road 66. It is easy to reach by train and bus. If you are looking for a hotel in Sásd, these details offer two useful points of reference: its location on the main road and the option of arriving by train or bus. Local cultural attractions also give your stay a distinctive focus.

Local history at the Sásdi Történeti Téka

The Sásdi Történeti Téka exhibition explores ethnographic and local heritage topics, as well as the history of local industry, trade and the railway. It connects local history with several specific subject areas rather than focusing on just one aspect of the town.

You must book in advance to visit the local history exhibition. Bear this in mind if the Téka is to be a focus of your stay.

The collection’s origins are also part of its history: members of the Honismereti Szakkör organized it with the support of a museum specialist. As part of the “Digitár” project, completed in 2012, a new exhibition room for the collection opened in the Téka building.

Members of the Honismereti Szakkör meet every two weeks. Their activities include collecting and organizing objects, compiling a chronicle and running an exhibition. Alongside the Téka’s subject matter, collecting, organizing and sharing knowledge are also central to the group’s work.

The church and memorial sites

Another historic highlight is the Kisboldogasszony Church in Sásd. Built in 1796 in the Zopf style, this Roman Catholic church is adorned with an altarpiece by Dorfmeister. A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands in the church garden. Its construction date and style offer an architectural point of reference, while the altarpiece and garden statue add specific artistic and religious themes.

The Hősök kertje offers a different perspective: in front of the chapel stands a bronze statue commemorating those who fell in the First World War. The monument is the work of sculptor Károly Cser. The church and memorial site thus represent different aspects of Sásd’s history.

More cultural highlights in Baranya

The wider destination of Baranya offers another cultural perspective. In Pécs, the Early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae includes decorated tombs from the 4th century. They were built as underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels and decorated with Christian wall paintings. This offers a different way to explore history than the local heritage topics at the Téka in Sásd.

The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter in Pécs includes the exhibitions “Golden Age of Zsolnay” and “Pink Exhibition,” as well as an exhibition about the family and the factory’s history. Together with the necropolis, this regional perspective presents two distinct areas of cultural history. In Sásd itself, the Téka, the church and the memorial site remain the tangible points of connection to local history.
