Discover Sellye: Culture, Green Spaces and Thermal Bath
Accommodation in Sellye
Sellye brings together a range of cultural themes, green spaces and a seasonal thermal bath. When choosing your destination, you can consider whether you are most interested in exhibitions, historic park features or bathing facilities. The individual places differ considerably, ranging from a photo exhibition on the town’s history and original furnishings to a thermal bath with four different pools.
Exhibitions and open-air museum in Sellye
The museum gallery permanently displays the photo exhibition “Üdvözlet Sellyéről.” Its images offer insights into the town’s history, which spans several centuries. Another permanent exhibition is dedicated to the life and work of Kiss Géza; it was renewed in 2023. The two exhibitions therefore focus on different subjects: one explores the town’s history through photographs, while the other presents a person and their work.
Behind the museum building, an accessible open-air exhibition with an open-air museum is located in the courtyard. The collection also includes the talpas house, where original furnishings are on display. These objects complement the photographic insights with a different kind of exhibition experience. The museum gallery and the open-air exhibition thus offer different ways to explore Sellye’s cultural themes.
Castle park, arboretum and protected areas
The castle park is in the town centre and covers seven hectares. It was laid out around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and characteristic historicist features from that period have been preserved. Its historic design is therefore as much a defining feature of the park as its central location and size.
The arboretum surrounding Draskovich Castle covers 7.65 hectares and has been protected since 1965. On the outskirts of town, Kis-rét lies within an area covering 79.1718 hectares. It is important to distinguish between the areas: Kis-rét is locally protected within this larger area; the stated total area does not refer to Kis-rét alone.
The Reformed Church also provides a distinctive architectural landmark in Sellye. It stands on a raised hill north of the town centre. A brick retaining wall encloses the hill and is part of the church’s described setting.
Thermal bath: pools and seasonal opening
Sellye Municipal Thermal Bath is set in four hectares of park-like grounds. It has four pools: a swimming pool, a teaching pool, a sitting pool and a children’s pool. The thermal water in the sitting pool is 36 °C. This temperature applies to the sitting pool; it does not automatically apply to the other pools.
The stated operating season is from 1 June to 31 August, with daily opening hours from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Check these times locally before your arrival. The seasonal opening period is especially relevant if the thermal bath is an important part of your trip. If you are interested in the exhibitions, castle park, arboretum or church, their respective themes and features are the main consideration; specific visiting hours are not provided here.
Sellye’s attractions range from the town’s history told through photographs and a collection of original furnishings to historic park features and seasonal bathing.
