Palkonya is part of the Villány wine region and the Villány–Siklós Wine Route. This gives you a choice of different focuses for your stay: wine, historic architecture and outdoor trails. A striking historic ensemble is the cellar row, with 53 press houses arranged in several rows on a slope facing the vineyard. Other options include a self-guided wine tour, a truffle hunt with a dog and an international cycling route through Palkonya. This combination can help you decide, before choosing a hotel, whether you want to focus your stay more on culture, wine or outdoor activities.

Historic Cellar Row and Architecture

The historic cellar row is a protected national heritage site. Its 53 press houses stand in several rows on a slope facing the vineyard. The repeating rows and their orientation toward the vineyard make the layout a defining feature of the ensemble. Palkonya’s protected houses also preserve traditional Swabian architectural values through local architectural heritage protection.

The Catholic Church of St. Elizabeth adds another perspective on the area’s architectural history: it was built by the Batthyány family and dedicated to Saint Elizabeth in 1816. At the cellar row, the number and arrangement of the press houses shape the impression; at the church, the patronage and dedication are clearly identified. Together, they offer different points of reference for exploring local architecture.

Wine and Getting Your Bearings Locally

The self-guided Pincejáró tour follows the historic cellar row and visits selected wineries. At each of the three wineries, it includes three wines, making nine wines in total. The tour combines the cellar row with tastings at several selected wineries.

Trails and Activities

The international “Three Rivers” cycling route runs through Palkonya. A marked and signposted trail leads from the vineyards near Palkonya onward to Vylyan Pincészet in Kisharsány. A vineyard walk leads to the Chapel of St. Bartholomew, where you can rest in the shade of a chestnut tree. The route descriptions offer different points of interest: the cycling route runs through Palkonya, while the marked trail has a named destination in Kisharsány.

The Palkonya truffle program includes an approximately four-kilometre truffle hunt with the dog Szálka through hills, woods and fields. The program also includes tasting different types of truffles and the opportunity to watch Szálka searching. Rézsű Play Park offers visitors a recreational activity with a barefoot park. It encourages children’s direct contact with nature and environmental awareness. The two activities have different focuses: the truffle hunt centres on the terrain, the dog and tasting, while the barefoot park focuses on children’s contact with nature.

Getting There and Finding Accommodation

The easiest way to reach Palkonya is by train on the Pécs–Mohács route. For your specific travel date, it is advisable to check the timetable before departure. The Palkonya Gastro Village map shows local wineries, restaurants and accommodation providers, as well as major hiking trails and sights. It therefore provides a shared reference point for planning around different interests. As map details may change, it is worth checking the latest version before including individual listings in your plans.
