If you are looking for a hotel in Szentlőrinc, you can shape your stay around your cultural interests: the town’s local character ranges from the Amtmann House and a Baroque church to the history of its railway junction. These three themes offer different perspectives on the town’s past. When planning your trip, consider whether you are especially interested in domestic life, architecture, or the development of transport.

Cultural History in Szentlőrinc

The Brantner-Koncz House is now a foundation-run museum dedicated to bourgeois domestic life in the 19th and 20th centuries. At the same time, it is a preserved, listed Amtmann house dating from the 18th century. Two different periods therefore come together in one place: the history of the building and the domestic culture to which the museum is devoted. If you are interested in historic ways of living, this contrast is particularly illuminating. Check visitor access before planning a visit.

The Baroque church was built in 1718 by Countess Mária Breiner and is protected as a national monument. Its organ has its own later history: József Lesnyik and Ernő Kész rebuilt it around 1880; the Angster factory carried out another rebuild in 1937 (Opus 1137). This makes it possible to distinguish the history of the building from that of the instrument: work on the organ in the late 19th and early 20th centuries followed the construction of the church in the early 18th century. As a cultural and historical landmark in Szentlőrinc, the church complements the Amtmann House with a second, distinct architectural and heritage connection.

The Railway as Part of the Town’s History

The railway also shapes the town’s historical story. When the Pécs–Barcs line opened in 1868, Szentlőrinc became an important railway stop. The construction of the Budapest–Szentlőrinc line in 1882 and the Szentlőrinc–Slatina–Našice local railway in 1895 turned the town into a railway junction. Compared with the buildings dating from the 18th century, this railway development represents a later phase in the town’s history.

More Perspectives on the Wider Destination of Baranya

The wider destination of Baranya also offers further cultural and natural perspectives. The early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae in Pécs includes decorated tombs dating from the 4th century. The burial chambers are underground, while memorial chapels above ground are also part of the site; richly decorated Christian murals adorn the tombs. The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter offers a different focus, with the “Golden Age of Zsolnay” and “Pink Exhibition” displays, as well as an exhibition on the family and factory history. For children, the quarter has outdoor playgrounds, an interactive lab, a planetarium, the Bóbita Puppet Theatre, a ceramics painting workshop, and classes at the Hercules Workshop. The freely accessible outdoor area can be entered and used free of charge during opening hours; check the hours before visiting, as they may change.

Near Szaporca, the Ős-Dráva Visitor Centre offers an interactive exhibition, an agricultural demonstration area with hands-on farming, and three themed educational trails. They cover traditional agriculture, the Ős-Dráva Programme, and the wildlife along the Drava. The agricultural area features native Hungarian domestic animals, including Hungarian Grey cattle, Mangalica pigs, Hucul horses, and old breeds of sheep and poultry. The wilderness trail along the Old Drava adds to the nature theme with a birdwatching and bird-ringing station, a viewpoint, a photography hide, a covered activity area, and several rest stops.

In Villány’s cellar row, you can go from cellar to cellar all year round, sampling wines and tasty dishes. This adds a culinary dimension to the wider destination of Baranya, alongside its culture and nature.
