Several railway-related attractions come together in Almamellék: a tourist ride on the Zselici Csühögő Forest Railway, a pedal-powered draisine, and exhibitions at the station. They offer different ways to enjoy a stay—from a route through a valley, to a ride powered by your own pedalling, to visits to interactive and themed exhibitions.

Through the valley by forest railway

The Zselici Csühögő Forest Railway runs between Almamellék and Sasrét and offers a tourist ride. Its route is six kilometres long and passes through a broad valley with beautiful views. On this ride, the journey itself is part of the experience: the railway connects the two places mentioned and runs through the valley landscape described here. It is worth checking the timetable in advance when planning your day.

A draisine right by the station

A 530-metre draisine track was built beside the station building in Almamellék in 2025. Visitors can ride a pedal-powered draisine along it. This is a different railway experience from the tourist ride on the forest railway: the draisine is powered by pedals, and its purpose-built track is considerably shorter than the forest railway’s six kilometres. The two activities can therefore be distinguished by their length and the way the ride is powered, without treating them as the same experience.

Exhibitions at the departure station

The “Biedermannok Öröksége” interactive exhibition is housed in the station building in Almamellék. In addition, visitors can see a forestry exhibition and an exhibition about the narrow-gauge railway at the Zselici Csühögő’s departure station. The exhibition inside the station building and the two themes at the departure station offer different perspectives: one focuses on an interactive exhibition experience, while the others focus on forestry and the narrow-gauge railway.

This makes it possible to plan your stay around specific interests. Those who want to experience the landscape on a tourist ride can use the six-kilometre forest railway route as a guide. The draisine offers a pedal-powered ride on the 530-metre track beside the station building. Visitors interested in the railway’s history and themes can include the exhibitions in their plans. Before your visit, check the current travel and visiting arrangements for the forest railway, draisine track, and exhibitions.

More to explore in the wider destination of Baranya

The wider destination of Baranya offers other distinct cultural attractions that are separate from the railway experiences in Almamellék. In Pécs, the Early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae includes decorated tombs dating from the 4th century. They were built as underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels and adorned with richly detailed Christian wall paintings. Also in Pécs, the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter includes the “Golden Age of Zsolnay” and “Pink Exhibition” exhibitions, as well as an exhibition on the family and factory history. These attractions add to the cultural context of the wider destination of Baranya; they are not station exhibitions in Almamellék.
