Several historical perspectives come together in Szigetvár: from the castle and military history exhibitions to a house from the Ottoman era and a former mosque that is now used as a Catholic parish church. The city centre also has a thermal bath, a cultural venue, and recognised local specialties. When planning your stay, you can focus on different aspects without reducing the city’s history to a single perspective.

History from Different Perspectives

Szigetvár Castle was declared a national memorial site in 2016. The Andrássy Castle houses the exhibition on the military history of Szigetvár in 1566, featuring objects from the 16th century and the Zrínyi family. The exhibition “Megállítani Szulejmánt” offers a journey through time. Interactive models show historical layers of the castle and a map of modern-day Szigetvár. The approaches are therefore quite distinct: historical objects on the one hand, interactive models and a map on the other.

The Török House offers a glimpse into everyday life in settlements during the Ottoman era. It is considered the only surviving residential building among the architectural remains from this period preserved in Hungary. This view of settlement life and residential architecture complements the military-historical perspective. The Ali Pasha Mosque, now the Szent Rókus Church, reflects a different historical development: it was built in 1588–1589 and later converted into a Catholic parish church. The dome features a fresco by István Dorffmeister depicting the deaths of Zrínyi and Suleiman, as well as the recapture of the castle.

The Hungarian-Turkish Friendship Park was established in 1994, on the 500th anniversary of Sultan Suleiman’s birth, at a site associated with his siege of Sziget Castle in 1566. The statues of Sultan Suleiman and Miklós Zrínyi face the site of their battle at Sziget Castle. Unlike the exhibitions, the park focuses on the two figures and their connection to the historic site.

When planning your visit, it can also help to consider how history is presented: Andrássy Castle focuses on historical objects, “Megállítani Szulejmánt” on interactive models and a map, the Török House on insights into everyday life in settlements, and the church on its architectural history and fresco. This lets you choose a focus based on your interest in collections, everyday life, or visual representations.
