History Between Doboz and Szanazug
Doboz and its surroundings were first mentioned in written records as early as 1075. The finds from the Szanazug area are distinct: Scythian, numerous Avar and other pre-Carpathian finds were discovered there, including the remains of an old settlement and a church.
Nature and Cultural Destinations in Békés
The Békés destination includes other distinct nature and cultural attractions. The Körösvölgyi Animal Park is set in a 26-hectare grove in Anna-liget, Szarvas. Along its approximately two-kilometre walking trail are bird aviaries, animal houses, wetlands and spacious enclosures. The Jégmadár Water Nature Trail begins at the park’s jetty and runs for one kilometre along the Szarvas–Békésszentandrás oxbow lake. Its eight floating buoy stations introduce visitors to the oxbow lake and its flora and fauna. The trail is accessible only by canoe or boat and is intended primarily for canoe and rowing-boat users without an expert guide.
Another nature and wildlife observation destination in Békés is the Sterbetz István Bustard Conservation Visitor Centre in Réhely, near Dévaványa. This is the only place in Hungary where visitors can see great bustards at close range. Guided tours, birdwatching, nature photography, themed programmes and astronomy demonstrations can be requested.
The Bihari Táj Napja also offers a specific seasonal highlight: the festival takes place every year on the third weekend of May. Visitors can see wild orchids in the Ugrai Meadow, learn about the birdlife of the Biharugra fishponds on a guided tour, and attend other specialist and cultural programmes.
For those interested in culture, the collection of the Munkácsy Mihály Museum in Békéscsaba includes natural history, archaeological, ethnographic, historical and art historical objects. Gyula Castle was built in the 15th century and is now the only intact lowland brick castle in Central and Eastern Europe. The museum collection and castle therefore offer distinct historical highlights in the Békés destination.
