Mezőkövesd combines Matyó culture and crafts with sports facilities, parks and Zsóry Bath. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can plan activities for your stay around your interests: from visiting museums in the town to exploring crafts in Hadas, or enjoying the bath, getting active or cycling.

Discover Matyó culture and crafts

The Matyó Múzeum focuses on Matyó folk culture and its traditions. Topics on display include a Matyó wedding procession, traditional costumes, photographs and a blue-dye workshop. Surc coat-making and a traditionally furnished farmhouse are also featured. The Takács István Gyűjtemény (Galéria) offers a different perspective on art: more than 250 works are on display across twelve rooms, including landscapes, portraits, genre scenes and fashion designs.

The Hadas Látogatóközpont introduces visitors to the Hadas district, Matyó embroidery and traditional costume through interactive exhibits. The preserved old farmhouses in Hadas now serve as local history museums and creative houses, and welcome visitors. The Üstökös alkotóház showcases crafts related to traditional costume-making, including embroidery, smocking, crochet and fringe knotting. At the Bútorfestő és Hímző Alkotóház, you can learn about embroidery techniques.

Some houses also focus on specific crafts and events. At the Mézeskalács ház, folk artist Pető Anna displays historic gingerbread molds and explains the meaning of gingerbread symbols. Groups can decorate gingerbread there by prior arrangement. At the Gari Margit Emlékház és Zeneház, you can request a folk music event by prior arrangement.

Matyó folk art, including Matyó embroidery, was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in December 2012. You’ll encounter it not only in museum collections, but also in the crafts and traditional costumes showcased in the houses of Hadas.

Plan time for bathing, activities and excursions

The Zsóry Gyógy- és Strandfürdő has a children’s pool and a paddling pool, as well as a wellness area with saunas, a steam cabin and a whirlpool. There are several ways to stay active. Two squash courts at the Hadnagy Úti Sportcentrum are open year-round. From spring to autumn, two sand tennis courts, a Lábfoci field and outdoor fitness equipment are also available. The Kavicsos-tó Szabadidőpark has a playground with a sandbox, slides and climbing equipment, a basketball court and more outdoor fitness equipment.

There are also outdoor facilities in the area in front of Zsóry Bath: a community space with a health park was created there in 2020. A playground, running track and outdoor fitness equipment are located around the central square. A developed cycle path runs between Zsóry Bath and Mezőkövesd. Check route conditions before setting out.

The Hajdu Ráfis János Mezőgazdasági Gépmúzeum combines a look at agricultural machinery with live demonstrations: some traction engines and one of the 100 different stationary engines are started up. Children can climb aboard one of the 60 tractors. Together with the collections on Matyó culture, this offers another, very different way to choose what to explore during your stay.
