The local character brings together viticulture and architectural and cultural history: Pincegyep is about cellars and tastings, while the churches and Tájház are distinguished by their architecture or furnishings.

Wine cellars and tastings

Pincegyep in Emőd comprises around 400 wine cellars. Visitors can sample various wines from local growers there. If you are planning a tasting, check in advance what is currently available.

Churches and architectural history

The Reformed Church in Emőd was built between 1799 and 1811 in the late Baroque style. A 33-metre-high tower stands in front of its south façade; the building is also protected as a historic monument. The construction period, style and position of the tower describe different aspects of the same church. By contrast, the Church of Urunk mennybemenetele is notable for its furnishings: it has an altar fresco and stained-glass windows considered unique in Hungary. The two descriptions of the churches thus focus on different features: architectural design and furnishings.

Rhédey Castle is also among Emőd’s historic monuments and attractions. Another type of building is the Népi lakóház–Tájház: a thatched-roof Tájház in the Klebovicz style, with an open smoke vent. The three-part dwelling comprises a parlour, a kitchen and a small outbuilding. The roof form, smoke vent and room layout are different features of this architectural style. Together with the churches and castle, the dwelling completes the picture of Emőd’s diverse architectural heritage.

More to explore in the wider destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén

The wider destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén also offers distinct cultural and nature experiences. The Baradla–Domica cave system is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Caves of the Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst. The short Aggtelek Cave Tour is 1 kilometre long, takes 60 minutes and is rated easy. Its length, duration and difficulty provide different points of reference when planning the tour. A nature trail connects the Aggtelek and Jósvafő entrances to Baradla Cave and introduces visitors to the area’s natural and cultural history.

Diósgyőr Castle in Miskolc offers a historical contrast. It reached its heyday during the reign of King Louis the Great in the 14th century. Later, it served as a residence and a wedding gift for six queens. Thus, the wider destination features not only the nature experience in Aggtelek, but also specific connections to the history of a castle. In the wider destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, the climate, soil quality and slope exposure of the Tokaj wine region are suitable for growing grapes.
