Felsőzsolca can be explored through two distinct themes: local history, visible at several memorial sites, and the cycling route to Miskolc. If you are planning a stay, you can decide whether to devote more of your time to local memorial sites or to a bike ride.

Local History and Memorial Sites

The Helytörténeti Kiállítóhely presents the history of the town from the Hungarian Conquest to the present day. As a permanent exhibition, it spans a broad sweep of history. Opening hours may change, so check them before your visit.

A distinctive building is Bárczay Castle, an emblematic, locally protected building in Felsőzsolca. Since 2001, it has housed the Felsőzsolcai Közösségi Ház and Városi Könyvtár as their headquarters. The castle is therefore both a protected building and the home of two municipal institutions.

In the front garden of Bárczay Castle, the Bolgár kertész emlékmű commemorates the Bulgarian gardeners who lived and worked in Felsőzsolca from the first third of the 20th century onward. It is the first monument to Bulgarian gardeners in Central Europe. The 1848-as emlékmű marks a different historical theme: erected in 1867, it commemorates the victorious Battle of Zsolca and those who fell in the battle, and stands at the burial site in Felsőzsolca. The two monuments highlight different aspects of local history, from a community’s life and work to remembrance of a battle.

Cycling Route and Travel Planning

A cycling route connects Felsőzsolca and Miskolc. A section within the administrative area of Felsőzsolca runs along a flood-protection embankment. The route was reported as completed and usable in 2023. This gives you two different options to focus on when planning your visit: the memorial sites offer a way to explore local history, while the cycling route connects the town with Miskolc. Note that the report on the route’s usability dates from 2023, and check current route information before setting out.

Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén in a Broader Context

The wider travel destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén offers additional cultural themes. Diósgyőr Castle in Miskolc flourished during the reign of King Louis the Great in the 14th century. Later, it served as a residence and a wedding gift for six queens. Miskolc National Theatre offers a different focus: as a performing arts complex, it has five stages. The region therefore brings together medieval history and the performing arts as distinct cultural themes.

Nature and caves are also part of the wider travel destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén. The Baradla-Domica Cave System is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Caves of the Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst. The short Aggtelek cave tour is one kilometre long, takes 60 minutes, and is rated easy. An educational trail connects the Aggtelek and Jósvafő entrances to Baradla Cave and introduces the area’s natural and cultural-historical values. The distinction is clear when choosing between them: the cave tour has a specified length, duration, and difficulty rating; the cycling route is defined by its connection to Miskolc and its section along the embankment.
