Tolcsva: Wine Culture and Local History
Accommodation in Tolcsva
Tolcsva brings together several distinct themes: wine culture, rural ways of life and herbs used in beauty care. The Bormúzeum és Borászati Kultúra Háza focuses on winemaking tools and exhibits; the Tájház presents the world of landless peasants. The Szépségkert adds themed herb beds to these perspectives.
Winemaking and changing exhibitions
The Bormúzeum és Borászati Kultúra Háza is housed in the former Constantin House. The ground floor displays period tools and exhibits related to viticulture and winemaking in Hegyalja. The upper exhibition rooms regularly host changing exhibitions on local history and contemporary art. The floors therefore offer different focuses: the ground floor centers on viticulture and winemaking, while the themes upstairs alternate between local history and art. In this way, the house combines a specific perspective on work in viticulture with a broader view of the town’s culture and history.
A glimpse into domestic life
The Tájház is located in central Tolcsva, beside the castle park, and focuses on the world of landless peasants. Period furniture and household objects illustrate this theme. The layout of a traditional Hungarian house is also part of the presentation: the tisztaszoba (parlour) was typically followed by a kitchen and pantry. The tisztaszoba facing the street was used almost exclusively on special holidays and occasions. This makes it possible to explore domestic life not only through individual objects, but also through the layout of the rooms and their different uses.
Herb beds and practical planning
The Szépségkert at Helia-D Herba-kastély features 24 themed beds of herbs used in beauty care. The garden adds a plant-focused perspective and a clearly defined theme to the exhibitions. Bicycles can be rented at the Borászati Kultúra Háza in Tolcsva; confirm availability directly with the venue.
Travel by train
Tolcsva shares a railway station with Olaszliszka on the Miskolc–Szerencs–Sátoraljaújhely line. Check current rail information before travelling, as details about stations and services may change.
The wider destination
In the wider destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, the Tokaj wine region offers another perspective on viticulture. It is legally designated as a protected wine-growing region; its climate, soil quality and slope exposure are suitable for growing grapes. Cellars are another regional feature: the Ungvári cellar labyrinth in Sátoraljaújhely connects at least 27 cellars and covers a ground area of 50,000 square metres. Beneath the park of Rákóczi Castle in Sárospatak, a cellar complex extends for about 2,000 metres and includes two wine-tasting rooms. These examples complement the specific exhibits in Tolcsva with regional perspectives on growing conditions and built cellar complexes.
