Mezőzombor: Wine, Views and History
Accommodation in Mezőzombor
Mezőzombor offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: the history of the Reformed Church, Disznókő Winery with its vineyards and Filagória viewpoint, and the MiniaTour model railway exhibition. This allows you to tailor your choices to the interests you actually want to include.
Vineyards and Views at Filagória
Disznókő Winery covers 107 hectares of vineyards on a site of around 150 hectares in the municipality of Mezőzombor. The figures distinguish vineyard area from the total site; area figures may change over time. It is important to note that the 107 hectares of vineyards are not the same as the total area.
The Filagória viewpoint offers a 360-degree panorama across the vineyards. The Neoclassical, four-column Filagória viewing pavilion was built by the Lónyay family in the 18th century. The view over the vineyards and the historic pavilion bring together the landscape and architectural history.
The viewpoint is easy to reach from the Disznókő Winery building in Mezőzombor and from the Sárga Borház car park. As access conditions may change, check them before your visit.
The Construction Phases of the Reformed Church
The history of the Reformed Church can be divided into construction phases. In 1732, the earlier church was a ruin; a new building erected in 1806 burned down around 1823 and was rebuilt in 1828–29.
The Reformed Church built in Mezőzombor in 1911 was blown up by retreating German troops on 21 November 1944. The present church building was constructed between 1948 and 1950. A 18-metre-high tower stands in front of its east façade.
The years 1732 to 1829 belong to the earlier construction history; the events from 1911 to 1950 describe the transition to the present building. This chronological distinction helps distinguish the different construction phases.
Wine Tasting and Model Railways
Disznókő wine tastings include a guided tour of the vineyards, winery and cellars, followed by a tasting in the historic cellar. The duration is 1 to 1.5 hours. This makes it possible to plan the wine tasting as a separate block of time. As arrangements may change, check in advance whether the offer is available for your preferred date.
The MiniaTour model railway exhibition offers a different focus. Its miniature world comprises more than 30 scenes; visitors can interact with it using 40 push buttons and two joysticks. The number of scenes and the controls describe two aspects of the exhibition: the variety on display and the ways to engage with the miniature world. If you plan to visit MiniaTour, check the current visiting arrangements in advance. The wine tasting combines a guided tour and tasting; MiniaTour offers a different kind of experience, with scenes and interactive controls.
