Tiszaújváros combines a thermal and beach bath with natural areas and sacred buildings, offering different focal points for your stay. Local highlights range from mineral-rich thermal water and designated floodplain forests to churches with distinctive floor plans and architectural details. When planning, you can decide whether bathing, nature or architecture should take center stage—or whether you would like to combine these experiences.

Thermal Baths and Swimming

Since 2001, the Tiszaújváros Thermal and Beach Bath has been classified as an országos gyógyfürdő, meaning a thermal bath of national importance. It uses thermal mineral water at 65°C, which rises from a depth of 1,200 meters. The water has a relatively high salt concentration, containing sodium chloride and bicarbonate. Its composition is therefore one of the specific features that distinguish the bath.

The bath covers just under seven hectares and includes five leisure pools, a landscaped sunbathing lawn, sports courts, a playground, and retail and service pavilions. These facilities make for a varied site where pools and other recreational amenities come together. Individual facilities may change, so check the latest information about the bath before making plans.

A separate swimming option is the pool at the Tiszaújváros Sports Center. Its pool is 25 meters long, has six lanes, and is 1.8 meters deep. Swimmers are welcome there every day of the week. If you are planning a swim, it is a good idea to check the current opening hours.

Floodplain Forests and River Landscapes

The floodplain forests of Tiszaújváros are designated as a Natura 2000 site. Along the Tisza, they comprise two areas of old, ash-rich mixed forest, covering a total of 24 hectares. The forests are also a habitat for two endangered species: the díszes tarkalepke (Euphydryas maturna) and the fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina).

The lowland landscape between the Sajó and Tisza offers another focus, with opportunities for fishing and water sports. In Tiszaújváros, you can also observe the annual phenomenon known as tiszavirágzás. If you would like to include nature experiences in your travel plans, you can choose between the floodplain forests, the river landscape and this recurring natural spectacle.

Churches and Architectural Forms

The Reformed Church of Tiszaújváros was consecrated on October 16, 1994. Its architecture is inspired by bell frames and bell towers in the Upper Tisza region. The sacred space measures 12 × 30 meters and can accommodate 400 people.

The Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Hungarians (Magyarok Nagyasszonya) was handed over in 1993 and is classified as a protected architectural asset under local regulations. It has three naves, a cruciform floor plan, and a 26-meter-high tower. The stained-glass windows in the transept and choir were designed by Tibor Bráda, a painter born in Tiszaújváros. The church’s form, tower and windows each provide a distinct architectural or artistic point of interest.

The Greek Catholic Church of the Transfiguration of Our Lord (Urunk Színeváltozása) can also be described through its form and interior: its foundation and dome are polygonal, and the interior walls are completely covered with icons. It was consecrated on August 11, 1996. The Reformed Church of Tiszaszederkény also stands in the Tiszaszederkény district, which is part of Tiszaújváros; it was consecrated on October 20, 1799.
