Erdőbénye offers a range of things to explore during your stay: a landscape shaped by a former quarry, a red-marked hiking trail, local history and the craft of cooperage. If you are looking for a hotel, you can plan your stay around whether you are most interested in nature, craftsmanship or cultural history.

Nature and hiking in Erdőbénye

A lake with crystal-clear water formed in a former quarry on the 230-metre-high Mulató-hegy. Like similar former quarry lakes in the surrounding area, it is called “Tengerszem.” The name is therefore associated with a type of landscape found elsewhere in the area, too.

The red-marked hiking trail starts in Erdőbénye. This gives you two distinct landscape features to consider when planning: the lake, formed in a quarry, and a hiking trail whose starting point is in the village. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Cooperage and local history

A group of sculptures dedicated to historical and scientific figures from the village stands in Erdőbénye’s main square. The sculptures are arranged around the county’s first Kossuth monument. Together, the figures and the monument form an ensemble that brings local history into the public space.

The renovated Kádárház houses an exhibition about the craft of cooperage. In addition, the master coopers who live and work in Erdőbénye offer workshop and craft demonstrations by prior arrangement. If you would like to attend a demonstration, arrange a time in advance with the coopers. The exhibition and a pre-arranged demonstration offer different ways to learn about the same craft.

More perspectives in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén

The wider destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén offers additional landscape and cultural themes. The Tokaj wine region is a legally protected wine-growing area; its climate, soil quality and slope exposure are suitable for growing grapes. This is a distinct regional landscape feature. In Erdőbénye, by contrast, the lake in the former quarry shapes the natural feature described here.

Diósgyőr Castle offers another historical perspective: it flourished during the reign of King Louis the Great in the 14th century. Later, it served as a residence and a wedding gift for six queens. Alongside Diósgyőr’s dynastic history, the Reformed College in Sárospatak offers another historical perspective in the wider destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén: it preserves treasures of Hungarian Protestant culture.

The Baradla-Domica cave system is another regional attraction; it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Caves of the Aggtelek and Slovak Karst. The short Aggtelek Cave Tour is 1 kilometre long, takes 60 minutes and is rated easy. Its length, duration and difficulty rating give you specific points of reference when adding this tour as a separate activity to your plans.
