Etyek: Wine Tradition, Historic Cellars and Film Park
Accommodation in Etyek
Etyek combines a long wine tradition with historic cellar complexes, heritage sites and attractions related to film production. If you’re looking for a hotel in Etyek, these different themes can shape your choice of destination: cellar architecture and wine may be the main draw, but so might local history or a visit to Korda Film Park. Each place and experience offers its own way to discover Etyek.
Historic Cellar Complexes in Etyek
The historic Körpince cellar ensemble is considered Etyek’s most significant sight. Its cellars are arranged in a ring along the edge of a hollow; the ensemble also includes a carriage entrance. This layout makes the complex a striking example of local cellar architecture. Another architectural feature is Kecske-gödör, an L-shaped group of old cellars in Etyek. Both descriptions draw attention to the spatial form of the cellars, not just their connection with winegrowing.
Wine and Local Produce
Winegrowing in Etyek dates back to Roman times. Its four best-known cellar areas are Körpince, Újhegy, Öreghegy and Kecskegödör. Visitors to these areas can learn about the production of wine, syrup, beer and cheese as well as enjoy wine tastings. What individual wineries offer may vary; if you’re interested in a particular tasting or demonstration, check availability in advance.
Etyek sparkling wine is also defined by specific production rules: it may be made only from locally grown Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc or Pinot Gris grapes using the méthode traditionnelle, and must age in the bottle for at least 24 months. These requirements distinguish it as a product from a general wine tasting. Etyek is also one of Hungary’s best-known regions for high-quality cider.
Local History and Cultural Heritage
Another historic destination is the Magyar-kĂşt building, constructed in the Neoclassical style in the first half of the 19th century. The two statues of Saint Wendelin and Saint John of Nepomuk are also associated with a specific date: they were placed at their present location in Etyek in 1779. Behind the statues, the Calvary group with fourteen Stations of the Cross was built on a hill in 1825. The station images were painted on iron sheets.
The Tájház in Etyek displays household items, traditional clothing, part of a formal reception room and objects from religious life. The collection may change. For visitors interested in domestic and everyday culture as well as cellar complexes, the house offers a different focus from the town’s historic monuments.
A Look at Film Production
The Korda Film Park visitor center offers a guided tour lasting two to two and a half hours. Visitors learn about the main stages of film production. Advance booking on the website is required. The tour therefore has a clear time commitment and differs from the themes of wine, cellar architecture and local history. If the film park is part of your travel plans, allow for the required advance booking.
More Ways to Explore the Székesfehérvár Destination
The broader Székesfehérvár destination also encompasses natural attractions that are not part of Etyek itself. The Pákozd Rock Formations can be reached from Pákozd via several hiking trails, which are also suitable for cycling. The geological nature trail links the rock formations; it was established in 1994. The reed beds at Lake Velence in Fejér County provide a habitat for thousands of waterbirds. These regional features differ from Etyek’s cellar and wine culture and offer an additional perspective on the Székesfehérvár destination.
