Discover Előszállás through its local history, architecture and a road route. The annual “Mikulás-futás” adds a recurring event to these themes. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Előszállás, you can consider whether you are mainly interested in architectural history or would like to plan your stay around the run.

Getting around by road

Main Road 61 runs through Előszállás and connects Main Roads 6 and 7 on the route between Dunaföldvár and Nagykanizsa. Along this route, Előszállás is the first town after Dunaföldvár. Check road conditions when planning your journey.

Near Előszállás, there is an exit on the M6 at kilometer 86 in the direction of Előszállás. The road information serves different purposes: the main road places the town on a route that passes through Előszállás, while the motorway exit points in the direction of the destination.

Local history and architectural styles

Előszállás and its surroundings were settled even before Roman times. The name of the town is documented in 1537 in the form “Elevzallas” in an Illésházy deed kept at the Hungarian National Museum. This brings together an early settlement history and a specific record of the name from the 16th century.

The former Cistercian monastery, locally known as “Kastély,” was built in 1765. It served as the estate manager’s residence, the center of estate administration and accommodation for retired members of the order.

The Roman Catholic Parish Church of Kisboldogasszony in Előszállás was built in 1778–1779 in the Baroque style. Its central tower projects forward; the nave has two bays, while the chancel is narrower and ends in a semicircle. A bay is a section of the nave, so “two-bay” means it has two such sections. If you are interested in church architecture, you can compare the tower, nave and chancel by their different forms.

A chapel dedicated to Saint Anne was built in Előszállás in 1751. Chronologically, it predates the former monastery of 1765 and the parish church from 1778–1779. It is therefore the earliest of the three construction dates mentioned here.

The annual run

The “Mikulás-futás” runs from Előszállás to Nagykarácsony. At the 2024 edition described, more than 100 participants covered the seven kilometers from Előszállás to Nagykarácsony. If you would like to plan your stay around the run, check the date of the relevant edition.
