Fertorakos: Quarry, History and Beach
Accommodation in Fertorakos
Fertőrákos offers several different points of interest for culture enthusiasts: historical traces in the centre and along Fő utca, the quarry halls, collections and craft activities, as well as the beach on the Hungarian shore of Lake Fertő. When planning a stay, it is worth keeping the visiting arrangements for each place in mind: while some historic sites have been preserved in the village, the episcopal castle is currently not open to visitors; arrangements for guided tours at the museum may change.
Historical Traces in the Village Centre
In the centre of Fertőrákos stands Hungary’s only 17th-century pillory still preserved in a public square. Along Fő utca, four-metre-high walls dating from the 16th century, with embrasures, can still be seen. The two dates place these structures in different centuries: the pillory dates from the 17th century, while the walls along Fő utca date from the 16th. Those interested in local history will find both a single object preserved in public and a stretch of historic walls with clearly recognisable architectural details.
The episcopal castle of Fertőrákos served the bishops of Győr partly as a refuge and partly as a summer residence. This former function should be distinguished from the current visitor situation: the castle is in need of renovation and is not currently open to visitors. As this may change, check its status again before planning a visit.
Quarry: Theatre and Nature
Over almost two thousand years, cavern-like halls formed in the quarry at Fertőrákos. Today, the quarry serves as an exhibition and event venue with a distinctive atmosphere. The Barlangszínház is part of this cultural offering: its theatre hall has exceptional acoustics. The quarry is therefore not only a striking setting, but also a venue for events and theatre.
A path through the quarry leads to themed viewpoints. There, visitors can learn about protected plant and animal species. The viewpoints link the path to nature-related topics, adding insights into protected species to the quarry’s exhibitions and events. For visitors interested in both culture and nature, these are two different aspects of the same place.
Collections and Ceramics
The Ásványmúzeum in Fertőrákos houses a collection of around 2,000 calcite crystals and 400 fossils. The owner guides visitors through the collection, explains how it was formed and answers questions. If a guided tour is important to your plans, confirm its current availability in advance. The approximate collection figures give an idea of its two main focuses: calcite crystals and fossils.
The local history exhibition includes a ceramics workshop in the back courtyard of a typical Rákos house. The handmade, individually crafted pieces can be viewed and purchased in the adjoining shop. This offering combines a look inside the workshop with the opportunity to see and buy the ceramics on site.
Beach and Routes to the Mithras Shrine
Fertőrákos has the only beach on the Hungarian shore of Lake Fertő. This clearly distinguishes it from the village’s historical and cultural visitor attractions.
A narrow path leads from Fertőrákos through Fertő-Hanság National Park to the Mithras Shrine. You can reach it on foot, by bicycle or by small train. These three options offer different ways to travel the route. Seasonal opening details are a separate matter; check the arrangements for your planned visit in advance.
