Discover Szakony
Accommodation in Szakony
When looking for a hotel in Szakony, you can consider whether you would like to explore the town mainly through its churches and local history, or through its cycling connections. Szakony lies on the left bank of the Répce. A cycle route runs through the town, connecting Lutzmannsburg in Austria with Bükfürdő. Historic churches and a specifically named cycling route offer different starting points for planning your trip.
Churches and local history
The Roman Catholic church in Szakony was rebuilt between 1863 and 1869 and renovated in 1871. Its construction history therefore comprises two phases in the 19th century. One distinctive feature of its furnishings is the altar of Mary: Fendt János of Sopron carved it in 1890, and Habich gilded it. The altarpiece shows Saint Stephen offering the country. The attribution of the painting to Storno Ferenc is tentative: it is probably by him.
The Evangelical church was consecrated on the first Sunday of Advent in 1793. During a renovation in 1886, it was lengthened by one third and fitted with new pews, a forecourt paved with cement slabs, and a sacristy. At the same time, the tower was raised and fitted with two new bells. The consecration date and the later work tell different parts of the church’s history: while the date marks the church’s beginnings, the detailed list of renovations shows how the building changed over time. The Evangelical congregation in Szakony is one of the oldest congregations, dating back to the 16th century.
There is also a historical connection reaching further back: in Roman times, a guard post on the Amber Road, which ran through the area, was located in the territory of Szakony. Together with the church construction and congregation records, this connection spans a broad period, without suggesting that every aspect of the town’s history dates to the same era.
Cycling and rail travel planning
The cycle route through Szakony connects the Austrian town of Lutzmannsburg with Bükfürdő. A description dated May 30, 2026, also mentions the themed cycling tour “Kápolnák útján,” starting in Szakony: it is described as 49 kilometres long, taking one day, of moderate difficulty, and free of charge. If you are planning a specific ride, check in advance whether the tour is running on your chosen date. The information on length, duration and difficulty helps you assess the scale of the tour; the cycle route through Szakony offers another point of reference for cyclists.
For rail travel, it is important to note that Szakony has no railway line. The nearest railway station is in Bük. If you are planning your trip by train, you can take this station into account and check the connections for your intended travel date. This allows you to consider both your interests in history and cycling and the town’s rail connections when choosing a hotel in Szakony.
