Debrecen offers a variety of options for your trip: extensive park paths, museums, a cinema with a regular program, and a science center. The places that interest you most can shape your travel experiences. The following topics range from outdoor activities in green spaces to local history and science.

Parks, paths and outdoor events

In Nagyerdei Park, winding paths invite you to explore the forest. You can walk and cycle along the promenades, and there are also opportunities to exercise outdoors. The Nagyerdei Szabadtéri Színpad open-air theatre is located in the heart of the park, among tall Scots pines and oaks. From spring to autumn, its program includes theatre performances, concerts and musical productions. If you have a particular date in mind, check the current schedule in advance.

Evening concerts, light painting and the Fog Theatre take place at Debrecen City Park Water Tower. The Fog Theatre is considered unique in Hungary. The Water Tower Adventure Center is also one of the attractions in Nagyerdei Park. The Sziget-kék theme park opened in July 2022 beneath the shady trees of Nagyerdő, on the site of the former Ötholdas Pagony playground.

Lake Békás is one of the city’s most popular natural attractions and offers opportunities for recreation to both locals and visitors. It complements the forest paths of Nagyerdei Park with another place focused on outdoor relaxation.

Museums, cinema and local history

The Déri Museum combines an extensive local history collection with Frigyes Déri’s collection on universal cultural history. It also houses works by one of Hungary’s best-known and most celebrated artists. The different collections offer different perspectives: one on local history, another on cultural history and art.

Apolló Cinema is Debrecen’s oldest cinema. Throughout the year, it regularly hosts themed screenings, film festivals and preview screenings. Alongside the collections, film events are therefore another part of the city’s cultural offerings. Piac utca is Debrecen’s main street; its famous Debrecen fairs were held there for centuries. The city center thus brings together a modern streetscape and a long history of markets.

The University of Debrecen Botanical Garden also has its own history. It was established in 1928 behind the main campus building, after the original garden of the Reformed College was demolished. Those interested in the development of the city’s cultural and educational sites will find another historical point of interest here.

Experience science and nature

The Agora Science Center features more than 30 interactive games and striking experiments demonstrating scientific phenomena from everyday life. An observatory is located on the top floor of the futuristic, three-story building. From there, visitors can observe the sun, planets and other celestial bodies. Its combination of hands-on activities and stargazing sets it apart from the city’s historical collections.

For a landscape beyond the city’s parks, the Zsuzsi Forest Railway travels through the Erdőspuszták, whose attractive scenery surrounds Debrecen to the northeast. Check the latest operating information before planning a ride. This lets you consider city attractions such as museums and the cinema alongside places for nature and recreation, without arranging them into a single sightseeing itinerary.
