Hajdúbagos brings together local history, traditional crafts and a distinctive surrounding landscape. The Reformed Church, Élő Tájház and Földikutya Reserve offer specific points of interest to help you plan your trip. If you’re looking for a hotel in Hajdúbagos, these themes can help you tailor your stay to your interests: architectural history, traditional activities, or nature and landscape each offer a different perspective on the town.

Church history and traditional crafts

During reconstruction, the Hajdúbagos Reformed Church was converted into a Reformed church. The sacristy on the south side was demolished, and the door and window between the sacristy and the choir were bricked up. These specific structural changes give the church historical significance for travellers interested in the development of religious architecture.

Élő Tájház features a variety of traditional crafts and creative activities: painting, drawing, wood carving, rope making, felting, bead weaving, embroidery, tapestry work, stained glass and making folk toys. The activities range from drawing and textile work to crafts involving wood and rope. If you’re interested in these activities, check which ones are currently available before visiting.

Landscape on the edge of town

The Hajdúbagos Földikutya Reserve is located near Hajdúbagos. On higher meadow areas, flat, molehill-like mounds indicate the presence of blind mole rats. Some mounds are about a metre wide and are usually arranged in rows. The local cultural attractions thus sit alongside a distinctive feature of the landscape: when planning your trip, you can decide whether you’re mainly interested in church architecture and crafts or in the landscape on the edge of town.

Hajdú-Bihar as a wider travel destination

The Hajdú-Bihar region also offers its own nature and culture attractions. The Hortobágyi National Park – the Puszta World Heritage Site covers nearly 75,000 ha in the Great Hungarian Plain in eastern Hungary. As a cultural landscape, the area preserves visible evidence of more than 2,000 years of traditional pastoralism. This expansive landscape offers a different perspective from Hajdúbagos’s local history: here, the Puszta and its pastoral traditions take centre stage.

The Hortobágyi-halastó pond system is another natural attraction in the region. It is a Ramsar site, an Important Bird Area, part of the World Heritage Site and a Natura 2000 site. The Hortobágyi-halastó nature trail offers walks of 3.6 km, 5.4 km or 10 km, with no difficult sections. The three distances let you choose how far to walk; the information about the sections also describes the nature of the walks.

Hortobágy Wildlife Park showcases the native wildlife of the Hungarian Puszta, including wolves, Przewalski’s horses, vultures and pelicans. A bookable Land Rover safari with an expert guide visits wild horses and aurochs. As booking conditions may change, it’s a good idea to check them before making plans.

Another cultural highlight in Hajdú-Bihar is the Shepherds’ Museum. It presents the lives of shepherds, as well as handmade clothing, tools and decorated personal belongings. The museum is housed in a former coach house that was part of the Hortobágyi Csárda complex.
